SPRING VALLEY (1-26-18) – The Matadors came into the contest ranked as the top team in the Open Division according to MaxPreps and looked every bit the top dog in the County in their convincing victory over the Sultans.
The contest was pretty much over in the first few minutes as the Matadors used pressure defense and forced many turnovers and converted those into points to lead 18-0 after the first three minutes.
It was a score fest as the Matadors nailed 6 3-pointers in the first quarter with freshman Sylena Peterson leading the way with 10 points as they pushed their run to 35-0 before Santana would get on the board thanks to a foul in the act of shooting with :45 remaining in the quarter.
Mount Miguel would lead 35-1 after the first period.
More of the same for the Matadors in the second quarter as Camara Douglas led the charge with 7 points. Mount Miguel again used their stifling defense to force Santana into a ton turnovers in which they would go onto actually hold the Sultans scoreless and lead 55-1 at the break.
Things in the second half went exactly like in the first half as the Matadors came out of the break on fire and again used their defense to their advantage and for the second straight quarter held the Sultans scoreless to lead 75-1 going into the fourth quarter.
Due to the fact that the Matadors led by so many points the entire fourth quarter was played with a running clock.
Leading the scoring for the Matadors who had multiple double digit scorers on the night was Douglas with 22 points, Peterson canned 17 points including a couple of three pointers, Citalli Gurrola nailed 5 3-pointers for 15 points, Tiaja Bennett scored 11 and Michelle Corley had 10 points.
With the victory the Matadors remain undefeated and move to 20-0 and if all stays as planned will go into their showdown next Saturday, February 3rd against La Jolla Country Day in the Coaches For Cancer showcase unbeaten and also for what will probably ending up being for the number one seed in the Open Division in CIF.
