Lady Norsemen, Foothillers score upsets

VALHALLA 1, STEELE CANYON 0 – Senior MADELINE HAUGEN scored on an assist from senior ASHLEY WAYMIRE and senior KATE DE WENT earned the shutout in goal as the Lady Norsemen knocked off the sixth-ranked Cougars.

In the first half, a ball was sent down the right sideline to Waymire, who then sent a great cross to Maddie Haugen, who buried it into the goal for the lead.

Valhalla earned its first league win of the season in three outings.

“We played a very exciting match this evening,” Valhalla coach GIL VEJAR said. “It was back and forth in the beginning of the first half, but we began to control the ball halfway through.

“The second half was very tense and a little more even. The last 10 minutes Steele Canyon pressed forward and had several good chances but our defense held.”

 

GROSSMONT 3, GRANITE HILLS 2 – The Foothillers scored three times in the second half to score the road upset of the No. 3 Eagles.

Grossmont (10-5-2, 1-2 Grossmont Hills League) will host Valhalla on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

 

HELIX 5, MONTE VISTA 1 – The Highlanders, currently ranked second in SDCIF Division 2, led 1-0 at halftime and improved to 3-0-1 in the Grossmont Hills League.

Helix (9-1-2) travels to face Mount Miguel next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

 

EL CAPITAN 8, MOUNT MIGUEL 0 – The Lady Vaqueros improved to 3-0-1 in the Grossmont Valley League, one-point behind leaders Helix and Santana.

El Cap hosts Otay Ranch on Saturday at 10 a.m. in a non-league game.

 

SANTANA 9, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 – The Sultans improved to 3-0-1 to remain tied with Helix for first in the Grossmont Hills League.

Santana (6-6-1) will host El Capitan next Tuesday in a league match.

 

CHRISTIAN 3, LINCOLN 1 – Junior star LAUREN SHERBURNE had a second-consecutive two-goal game.

Junior SHANNON ADAIR added the other goal for the Patriots in the non-league win.

Christian (12-3-2, 2-1-1 Eastern) will be back in league action on Tuesday at winless Coronado.

 

RIVER VALLEY 7, O’FARRELL CHARTER 0 – The Leopards scored three goals in the first half and moved into first place for now at 6-0-1.

River Valley will host Bayfront Charter in a league game next Thursday at 3:45 p.m.
