MISSION BAY – The Mission Bay Bucs set up the Battle at The Bay as a league challenge between the Western League and the Coastal League.
Mission Bay coach Marshawn Cherry matched up the teams pretty evenly for the day-long event at the Bucs’ gym, eventually pitting his No. 1-ranked team against preseason No. 1 Foothills Christian in the much-anticpiated finale.
The arena was filled to capacity for the nightcap.
TAESHON CHERRY had 24 points and DORIAN BLUE stepped up with 18 points, all coming from three-point range, as the third-ranked Knights downed the top-ranked Bucs, 61-58, Saturday night.
Mission Bay jumped out to a 4-0 lead that was quickly erased by a Foothills run.
Cherry knocked down a half-court shot at the end of the first quarter for an 18-17 Foothills lead.
The Knights opened the second with a 12-7 surge to move ahead 30-24 with 5:39 to go before halftime.
Foothills Christian led 36-33 at intermission.
Mission Bay did an impressive job on FCHS in the fourth quarter, holding the Knights to just five points to rally and force overtime.
Mission Bay took its first lead since early in the first quarter in overtime, 53-51, just 1:30 into OT, but the Knights went on a 5-0 run to make it 56-53 with 2:14 left.
Cherry hit a big three-pointer in overtime that was answered by the Bucs’ star Boogie Ellis, but the Knights YASSINE GHARRAM nailed a couple of free throws to ice it.
