SANTEE – The West Hills Wolf Pack made 26-of-27 free throws on Wednesday night in a 66-59 Grossmont Conference victory over the Monte Vista Monarchs.
Wolf Pack senior star CAM BARRY, the county’s leading scorer, went 15-for-15 from the charity stripe en route to 29 points, as West Hills re-assumed control in the fourth quarter after the Monarchs gradually closed an early lead late in the second half.
The Wolf Pack led 35-24 at halftime, but Monte Vista would close the gap early in the third quarter to put the result in doubt. West Hills regained the lead and knocked down several of those freebies down the stretch.
ADAM DILLON added 13 points for West Hills, including 6-of-6 from the line.
Barry had 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Monte Vista senior star DEONDRE MCHAYLE finished with 25 points, but was limited to just four points in the all-important deciding fourth quarter.
“Monte Vista kept coming,” West Hills assistant coach TIM BARRY said. “They are a pretty tough squad, especially McHayle.”
CHRIS SCHROEDER had seven points for West Hills.
The Monarchs’ DEMARCUS MCKAN and DERRICK WILEY both added 11 points.
“We did not play well early,” Monte Vista coach MIKE TULLY said. “Unforced turnovers killed us. We dug a 12-point hold and had to work too hard to close the gap.
“It was very close at the end, but Barry ended up on the free-throw line too often. They held on and played well. We need to continue to improve.”
Wolf Pack senior guard MICHAEL TOTAH had seven points and four assists, including this layup.
West Hills, which improved to 11-5 overall, will travel to face Grossmont (9-9) in a Hills League game on Friday at 7.
West Hills won its league opener, while the Hillers come into the contest 0-1 in the GHL.
