Patriots press Marauders on Eastern issue

MIRA MESA – The Christian High Patriots took their full-court press to Mira Mesa on Tuesday and forced the issue in order to take away a 60-53 Eastern League victory.

The game featured a top guard matchup between the Patriots’ NASHOM CARTER, and one of the county’s hottest guards in Noah Tumblin, of the Marauders.

With the Patriots playing on consecutive days, Christian bolted out to a lead thanks to a 10-0 run.

The Mauraders jumped back in the game with a couple of three-pointers from Tumblin and Cameron Miner.

The Patriots answered with some tough defensive stops and huge shots from junior guards ISAIAH ROBINSON and JORDAN GAINES to take a 12-point lead into halftime.

At the start of second half, the Patriots jumped right back into their full-court press and began to pull away from the Mauraders.

In the 4th quarter, the Mauraders began to make a comeback.

The Patriots committed some costly fouls that sent key contributing players to the bench and allowed the Mauraders to make a run to bring the lead down to 10 points.

Senior Carter closed the game out, controlling the floor and knocking down some key free throws to close the game.

The Patriots won their 10th game of the season.

JACKSON LARSEN led Christian with 16 points and 16 rebounds.

The Patriots with meet the Falcons from Scripps Ranch on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Ryan Athletic Center.

 

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 82, BISHOP’S 61 – Foothills Christian senior TAESHON CHERRY, a national five-star recruit, was passed on for the McDonald’s All-American Games on Tuesday, but then, following the victory over Bishop’s, announced his intention to attend Arizona State University after FCHS won the home game at Cuyamaca College.

Cherry made his commitment after a very recent trip to Tempe, Ariz. He notably de-committed from Southern Cal recently.

In Tuesday night’s game, Bishop’s battled early, as the score was 10-all during the first quarter, but FCHS led 41-25 at halftime.

Foothills Christian moved to 4-0 in the Coastal League.

JAREN NAFARRETE had 13 points for FCHS.

San Diego County third-ranked Foothills Christian, which has won seven-straight, second-place La Jolla Country Day (2-1, 14-5), which is ranked eighth in the county, on Friday, January 19 at 7:30 p.m. in La Jolla.

 

VALHALLA 50, EL CAJON VALLEY 48 – The Norsemen edged the Braves in a non-league game on El Cajon Valley’s floor.

Valhalla picked up its fifth win of the season.

Valhalla (5-13) is home to Helix on Friday at 7 p.m. in a Grossmont Hills League game.

El Cajon Valley (7-10) will be on the road at Mount Miguel at 7 p.m. in a Grossmont Valley League contest.

 

MATER DEI CATHOLIC 71, GROSSMONT 53 – The seventh-ranked Crusaders proved their might in the win at the Hillers’ gym on Tuesday night.

Mater Del, which is actually fourth in the county’s official power rankings, led 37-28 at halftime, but then really stepped on the Foothillers with an 18-5 third-quarter run.

Grossmont (9-9, 0-1 GHL) hosts West Hills (10-5, 1-0 GHL) on Friday at 7 p.m.
