EL CAJON (1-13-18) – The Christian High Lady Patriots are very talented with senior leadership, however, they have youthful experience in basketball 101.
However, they do have one of the best head coaches in the San Diego County in former Horizon and current head coach of the Lady Patriots, VICKIE CARRINGTON.
Her opposing head coach on Saturday night, LAURIE BYRD, of Santa Fe Christian, is a very seasoned coach with a very seasoned resume and leads a veteran Eagles’ squad, led by senior forward EMMA DUDLEY, who is committed to the University of Utah.
Santa Fe Christian is also represented by 7 seasoned senior players.
Prior to tip-off, the Christian High Lady Patriots appeared to be fired up as they were the last team on the schedule to play at their own-hosted 11th Annual Martin Luther King Tournament, with a late start of 8:30 p.m.
Early in the first quarter, it was a back and forth affair as the Lady Patriots were up 8-6.
It appeared, although not nearly as experienced, the Lady Patriots had a game plan, and they were executing well.
With 1:52 left in the first quarter of play, the Eagles’ Dudley scored back to back buckets, as the Eagles were now approaching a 13-0 run over the stunned Lady Patriots.
Christian was playing hard, however, turnovers early were starting to stack up, as the score at the the end of one quarter of play was 23-8, Santa Fe Christian.
Dudley led the scoring already with 9 out of the 23 scored.
After a quick discussion at the bench, along with words of wisdom and confidence, coach Carrington’s Lady Patriots went back to work for the second quarter of play.
After a few rebounds from SIMONE JAMES towards the end of the first half, the Lady Patriots were on a 6-0 run.
However, the score at the half was 33-20, Santa Fe Christian.
Although only 12 points were scored in the second quarter of play, both ARDEN LEEMAN and HANNAH RICHARDSON hit a 3-pointer.
The third and fourth quarter was much of the same.
The Lady Patriots would initiate a great block, hit a 3, and grab a few rebounds, not to mention not one of the Lady Patriot starters ever stopped playing hard, or even from the bench for that matter.
The Lady Patriots for this time around were simply overmatched by experience and knowledge of the game at the player level, but this squad improves immensely with every quarter of basketball they play, truly a team that plays together and is well-coached.
Christian fell, 68-43, but did come out and compete against a good Santa Fe Christian team.
Among the standouts for this evening’s performance, sophomore James was the leading scorer with 14, and quite a few rebounds, sophomore Richardson had 3 3-pointers.
The number 2-ranked team in Division 3, according to MaxPreps, Christian High’s (11-6, 3-0) next opponent is Mission Bay High (3-9, 1-2) at Mission Bay on Friday the 19th at 6 pm.
