LAKESIDE (12-29-17) – After a major heartbreaking loss to El Camino, 52-50 in OT, yesterday evening, the El Capitan Lady Vaqueros were amped up to take out their frustrations on their opponent from Orange County, Sage Hill (7-5).
But El Capitan fell short, 49-42, in the So Cal Prep Classic NAIA Division tournament game to drop the Lady Vaqueros to 3-8, however, it is still a very young season.
“We had a lead at the half due to DEVON BULLOCK’s ability to break their press and effectively set up her teammates for success,” said Lady Vaqueros head coach DARIN CURTIS.
Freshman MACKENZIE CURTIS led the way in the 1st half with 5 3-pointers.
Unfortunately for the home squad, the visiting Lighting from Sage Hill opened up the 3rd quarter against the Lady Vaqueros with 9-straight points and the lead as they gave up 21 overall points in the 3rd quarter.
The Lady Vaqueros were not gonna lay down and go quietly.
As the 4th quarter began and through the final quarter of play, sophomore ODESIA MENDEZ came off the bench to get physical, guarding the star player for the Lightning in the paint.
Freshman MIRANDA NICHOLS also added 7 points coming off the bench to go along with Curtis’ game-high 28 points.
The Lady Vaqueros play Olympian tomorrow afternoon at El Cap at 12;30 p.m. on December 30.
“These last 2 games have proved to myself and to our team, that win or lose, we played each game to the best of our ability,” said Curtis.
“I couldn’t ask for anything else, we played as a team, and this week we have relied a lot on our only returner, Devon Bullock, to be a big leader and helping us as freshmen become successful.”
