SPRING VALLEY – The county’s top-ranked team – the Mount Miguel Matadors – looked strong early and defeated Martin Luther King High, of Riverside, 52-50, in the Lady Matador Classic on the Matadors’ home floor Wednesday, improving to a perfect 11-0 on the season.
CAMARA DOUGLAS had 21 points for Mount Miguel, while 5-foot-9 junior CITALLI GURROLA added 15 points and SYLENA PETERSON had 13 for Mount Miguel.
MICHELLE CORLEY had a steal and a layup in the first quarter as Mount Miguel trailed early.
Douglas had an offensive rebound and a basket to try to convert a three-point opportunity during the opening minutes, as well.
Douglas had an assist to Gurrola, who hit a long three in the opening minute of the second quarter to close the early score to 16-15 in favor of King.
Mount Miguel faces Torrence (5-3) on Thursday night at 6:30 at home.
HELIX 57, BRAWLEY 24 – Helix senior DIAMOND WHITLEY had a steal and a layup in the first quarter for Helix and finished with 16 points as the Highlanders won at the Montgomery Aztec Holiday Classic.
CHARITY MCWASHINGTON had a steal for Helix and pushed it ahead to Whitley, who made a layup in the second quarter.
Helix (8-3) faces Castle Park (3-2) in the Aztec Holiday Classic at 6 p.ml on Thursday.
SANTANA 60, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 34 – In the So Cal Holiday Classic Blue Division, the Sultans won the eastern battle.
Santana improved to 2-2 and will face Canyon Crest on Thursday at home at 6:30 p.m.
Foothills Christian fell to 3-5 and will face Corona del Mar, of Newport Beach, on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mount Miguel High.
VALHALLA 52, POINT LOMA 41 – In the So Cal Holiday Classic Prep Silver Division, Valhalla defeated the Pointers for its first victory of the season in seven starts.
Valhalla limited Point Loma to just 18 percent shooting on 13-of-72 from the field. The Lady Norsemen forced 15 turnovers.
Valhalla is up against Fallbrook on Thursday in a tournament game at 5 p.m.
RANCHO BERNARDO 59, EL CAPITAN 40 – The Vaqueros lost in a home contest to the Broncos in the So Cal Holiday Prep Classic NAIA Division.
El Cap’s MACKENZIE CURTIS had 21 points, including a long three-pointer.
El Cap trailed 48-26 early in the fourth quarter.
El Capitan (3-6) next faces a formidable opponent in El Camino (3-3) on Thursday at 8 p.m. in another Prep Classic contest at home.
RANCHO BUENA VISTA 43, WEST HILLS 38 – The Wolf Pack dropped the contest in the FIBA Division of the So Cal Prep Holiday Classic at home.
The Wolf Pack face King, of Riverside, on Thursday at 5 p.m. at home.
BISHOP’S 67, EL CAJON VALLEY 22 – The Braves fell to the county 14th-ranked Knights, but VEAN GORGEES had 12 points for El Cajon Valley.
