SAN DIEGO – Monte Vista High senior AMIR CONLEY and junior JAIDEN DAWN got to soak up some of the Monarchs’ spotlight Thursday night, combining for 32 points in a comfortable 83-55 win over High Tech San Diego at the Destined To Be Stars event.
At times during the Monarchs’ hot start to the season, they have relied heavily upon on the scoring of senior superstar DEONDRE MCHAYLE.
And McHayle has responded time and time again, putting up as many points as need be to get Monte Vista in front on the scoreboard.
But McHayle was able to relegate much of the scoring duties to the supporting ranks thanks to the great start by Monte Vista.
Dawn had 10 points and at halftime and GABE GALVEZ scored six points in the second quarter as the Monarchs built a comfortable lead.
Conley was sharp early from deep range.
DEMARCUS MCKAN added 10 points for Monte Vista, while McHayle “took it easy” with his 10 points, all in the first three quarters.
Senior guard HEWA ALI scored nine points in the fourth quarter, proving the Monarchs’ depth.
The Monte Vista benched looked strong in its extended appearance.
“Our defense needs to improve,” said Monte Vista coach MIKE TULLY, ever the critic.
Monte Vista’s win on Thursday improved its record to 6-2, although they are 7-1 on the court this season.
Several days ago, the Monarchs has a victory overturned from their season-opener against Granite Hills.
The setback should hardly be a blip on the radar in the Monarchs’ serious quest for both league and section titles.
The Monarchs host Southwest (El Centro) on Saturday at 4:30 in a tournament game.
“We have a tough opponent this Saturday,” Tully said.
CHRISTIAN 78, VICTORY CHRISTIAN 46 – Patriots junior JACKSON LARSEN poured home 26 points on 14-of-25 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds as Christian broke open a 4-point halftime lead with a 28-7 run in the third quarter to down the Knights in a non-league game on the road.
Christian csenior NASHOM CARTER had a triple-double, adding 14 points, 11 assists and 10 boards, while junior teammate ISAIAH ROBINSON contributed 11 points, including a trio of tthree-pointers.
Carter almost had the illustrious “quad-dub,” finishing with seven assists.
The Patriots next take on Foothill, of Henderson, Nev., at the Rancho Mirage Holiday Invitational on Tue., Dec. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the RMHS main gym.
Foothill (4-0) is ranked sixth in the state of Nevada and third in the latest Las Vegas Review-Journal Class 4A rankings.
DEL NORTE 52, VALHALLA 40 – The Norsemen were fighting for their third victory of the season, but lost the chance in the fourth quarter as the Nighthawks outscored Valhalla 15-4 over the final eight minutes in the Grossmont Tournament at Grossmont High.
The teams battled to a 10-all tie after one, but Del Norte (1-1) led by five at halftime.
But the Norsemen battled back to make it a 1-point game.
Valhalla fell to 2-6.
The Norsemen will play Helix next Wednesday at 4:30 in the Crawford Tournament.
