2017 EAST COUNTY PREP BOYS BASKETBALL
EastCountySports.com staff report
EL CAJON – Several East County teams are off to flying starts to the 2017-18 season.
Christian (3-0), Mount Miguel (4-0) and Monte Vista (4-0) are all off to undefeated starts.
Absolutely no one, not even in Las Vegas could have predicted this outcome.
Playing from behind for the entire game is not what any coach or player prefers to do.
The Monte Vista Monarchs improved to 5-0 on the young season Tuesday night with the hard-fought win over the Ramona Bulldogs, 82-78, in double overtime.
Monte Vista senior star DEONDRE MCHAYLE poured home 46 points in the overtime thriller at the Santana Shootout.
The Monarchs trailed throughout regulation but tied the score on a three at the buzzer by senior guard JORDAN BRAMER.
After trailing the whole contest, Bramer was the hero for the time being, and as you can imagine, the Monarch bench players and coaches were going nuts.
The drama wouldn’t end there.
Then once again, down by three, Monte Vista forced the second overtime thanks to a three-point bank shot by Mr. Dependable himself, McHayle.
The crowd was going absolutely bananas.
McHayle was sharp at the line in the second OT. He finished the game with 10 rebounds and six assists.
The Monarch defense held on to defeat the Ramona Bulldogs.
“That was the game of the week,” Monte Vista coach MICHAEL TULLY said. “One of the more exciting games I’ve been around.”
Every squad has their scoring leader, or leaders, and your bench players, every game someone different typically steps up at crunch time.
“Bramer played a fantastic ballgame,” said Tully.
The undefeated Monte Vista Monarchs are 3-0 at home and 2-0 on the road.
The Monarchs next face Victory Christian Academy (0-2) on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7.
CHRISTIAN 86, SAN YSIDRO 69 – JACKSON LARSON, a junior scored 35 points and had 15 rebounds and senior guard NASHOM CARTER came home with 10 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists for the Patriots in the win over the Cougars at the West Hills Tournament.
The Patriots are off to a 3-0 start.
Junior guard ISAIAH ROBINSON finished with 14 points, while senior center DANIEL WELCH added 12.
Junior guard JORDAN GAINES had 7 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists for Christian.
The Patriots face Vista tonight at 7:30 in the West Hills Tournament contest.
MOUNT MIGUEL 78, KEARNY 53 – JAMES ALLEN led the Matadors with 20 points as Mount Miguel won at the Baron/Matador Classic to improve to 4-0.
DERON TRAYLOR added 12 points, while MARQUISE EDWARDS contributed 11 and sophomore PATRICK CHIMA had 10.
The Matadors will face Valhalla in a matchup of Grossmont Conference teams on Thursday at 6 in the Baron-Matador Classic.
SANTANA 66, SAN PASQUAL 58 – NICK BERHALTER had 26 points and TERRENCE SIMMONS added 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Sultans, who won at the Santana Shootout.
The Sultans improved to 3-1 with the victory.
Santana faces Escondido Adventist on Thursday in a Santana Shootout affair.
CANYON CREST 46, HELIX 31 – A sluggish Helix team slept walked through the first three quarters and could never get anything going in a loss to Canyon Crest at the Hilltop Tournament
JAYLEN HINSON led Helix in scoring with 17 points.
Canyon Crest led 27-15 at halftime. The game was a rematch of last year’s Hilltop Tournament final.
Helix (2-1) next faces Morse on Dec. 18 in a tournament game at Sweetwater High.
