LA MESA – The Grossmont Foothillers opened their 2017-18 season by defeating Monte Vista, 52-34, in a game matching Grossmont Conference teams.
Senior CANDACE HENDERSON had 20 points in the opening on 6-of-10 from the field and 7-of-10 from the line.
Sophomore SARAH HENRY had 19 points for the Foothillers on 5-of-8 from the field, along with eight rebounds, five asssists, six steals and two blocked shots.
Grossmont sophomore AMELIA ELLIOTT had four steals, while senior JAZMINE LEE had nine rebounds to go along with five points.
The Monarchs fell to 0-2.
Grossmont will stay in the conference for a meeting at Valhalla on Thursday at 6:15. It will be the season-opener for the Lady Norsemen.
STEELE CANYON 54, CHULA VISTA 41 – The Cougars outscored the Spartans by 17 in the third and fourth quarters combined to win the Matador Classic game.
Chula Vista gave the Cougars a battle in the first, as the teams were tied 12-all.
Cougars sophomore KHYLALA BRANDY hit a three-pointer from the left side on an assist from junior LALA WADLEY in the opening quarter.
The duo continued to make it happen for Steele Canyon, which notched its first win in four outings.
Brandy and Wadley would later both connect again from long-range.
Brandy led all scorers with 17 points.
WEST HILLS 47, OUR LADY OF PEACE 37 – The Wolf Pack won the Matador Classic game over the Pilots.
West Hills built leads of 18-7 and 34-20 before OLP put together a mild rally in the second half.
West Hills (2-1) faces Montgomery on Thursday in a tournament tilt.
GRANITE HILLS 42, MAR VISTA 37 – The Eagles led 23-15 at intermission, then built the advantage to 32-19 after three before holding off a Mariner rush in the fourth quarter in the San Diego County Hoops Report Tournament game.
It was the first win of the season for Granite Hills, which returns to action on Dec. 20 against Point Loma in the Lady Colts Tournament
EL CAPITAN 55, MORSE 42 – The Vaqueros outscored the Tigers 20-8 in the fourth to pull away for the non-league win inthe Matador Classic.
The Lady Vaqueros got off to a pretty fast start, taking a 20-11 lead after one quarter.
El Capitan (1-2) takes on OLP on Thursday in a Matador Classic game at 7.
MOUNTAIN EMPIRE 50, WARNER 27 – The Red Hawks won to continue a great start, improving to 3-0.
ARICIA BOYD, a 5-foot-5 senior, led Mountain Empire with 18 points.
Mountain Empire faces Vincent Memorial at home on Wednesday evening at 5.
The Red Hawks already beat Vincent, 44-30, in the season opener for both teams.
