EastCountySports.com staff report
EL CAJON (11-28-17) – The Granite Hills Eagles were glad to head home for the second game of the young season at the Eagles’ Nest, especially after playing a competitive game just yesterday against a formidable opponent in Monte Vista.
The Eagles reviewed their film very quickly and prepared to hit those free throws missed against the Monarchs a night earlier and bounced back at home against Victory Christian in a 77-46 blowout over the Knights in front of the home crowd.
Granite Hills, on short rest and all, came into the contest ready to avenge their recent loss.
Head coach DAN DUFFY mentioned the night before that his kids worked hard and could – and would – bounce back, even though they are a very youthful ball club.
The Eagles were leading the contest convincingly throughout and led at the half 52-30.
Granite Hills (1-1) definitely had something to prove after the heartbreaking loss to the Monarchs.
“MOSES SMITH and McKAY ROBERTS hit some big shots for us to get an early lead,” Duffy said. “XAVIER SMITH and DAVID COFFEY did a great job defending their 6’11” post player.”
Smith had 24 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots, while McKay and AUSTIN BALLO both had 12 points, while Coffey added 11 and Smith had 10 points.
Ballo led Granite with 8 assists.
SANTANA 64, SAN DIEGO ACADEMY 39 – The Sultans’ got a team-high 17 points from NICK BERHALTER in the season-opening win over the Cavaliers.
EL CAJON VALLEY 67, MAR VISTA 48 – The Braves led from start-to-finish in their season-opener.
