CHRISTIAN 68, MISSION BAY 12
EastCountySports.com staff report
MISSION BAY – Christian High senior quarterback BRAD JEREMIAH passed for a San Diego Section record-tying eight touchdowns, as the Patriots drubbed the winless Mission Bay Buccaneers, 68-12, Friday in the Eastern League opener for both teams.
Jeremiah now has 30 touchdown passes this season.
And that’s only through six games.
The record is 46 by La Jolla’s Collin Rugg, set in 2014.
Santana’s D.J. BUSCH had 44 in 1999.
Two other East County greats ANTHONY LAWRENCE (’13) and ABRAHAM MUHEIZE (’05) both had 41 touchdown passes in a season.
The Patriots scored on their first possession as Brad Jeremiah threw to receiver BRYCE RIEPL for a 43-yard score.
Riepl caught the short out near the left-side numbers at around the 40-yard line and cut back across the field to find the end zone, out-running the chasing Bucs for the score.
Jeremiah hit NASHOM CARTER with a screen pass, which the senior turned into a 54-yard score for the Pats. He made a couple of Bucs defenders look silly on a downfield spin, when the pair converged on Carter, and ended up falling to the turf together, while he continued on to the end zone.
Jeremiah hit JESSE MATTHEWS with a 30-yard strike for a score that Matthews hauled in with a Lynn Swann-type grab in the end zone.
Matthews had five catches for 84 yards on the night.
Jeremiah was 20-of-26 for 359 yards with no interceptions. His eight touchdowns tied St. Augustine’s Jake Santos (’03).
ALEXANDER GONZALEZ had four touchdown receptions from Jeremiah.
Junior DAVID VENTURA had two sacks for Christian (5-1, 1-0), while junior KYLE OLSEN had an interception and 63-yard return.
Christian hosts Morse in a huge league contest next Friday night at Granite Hills Stadium.
