Former Griff Moyer is Mesa’s man now

2017 GROSSMONT COLLEGE FOOTBALL
SAN DIEGO MESA at GRIFFINS
SATURDAY, 3 P.M.
EastCountySports.com staff report
EL CAJON – Nearly three years ago, East County quarterbacking stars BRAD CAGLE and SPENCER MOYER faced off in a less-than-memorable one-sided affair in Lakeside when Cagles’s championship-bound El Capitan squad rushed all over the overmatched Wolf Pack despite nearly 200 yards passing from then-West Hills junior.
Two years later, the duo would be competitive teammates vying for playing time last season at Grossmont College.
On Saturday, Cagle and Moyer will oppose one another again on opposite sidelines when the Griffins host San Diego Mesa at 3 p.m.
Moyer, who threw for 537 yards last season as the backup to Cagle at Grossmont, is touted to lead the Olympians offense this season.
Moyer passed for a career-high 247 yards and three TDs last Oct. 15, but the Griffs lost, 79-18, at powerful Fullerton after Cagle was knocked from the game after completing his first four passes. Two of Moyer’s miscues were returned for scores.
Cagle appeared fully entrenched at Grossmont’s starter entering this season.
Cagle threw for over 2,000 yards last season and 19 touchdowns as Grossmont had their moments early in the season before fading to several Southern California powers down the stretch.
Cagle had a 550-yard game in a 57-55 loss versus Saddleback last Oct. 29.
It should be noted that Grossmont’s entirely young roster consists of virtually no returning receivers.
“I’ve never actually had this young of a team so you can only expect the worst,” Grossmont head coach MIKE JORDAN said. “But really, the thing we have going for us is an excellent group of freshman players. The very few sophomores who are returning from last year’s team are great leaders and great players.
“We also had a very productive off-season with very good consistency and participation from the new players. We had quite a few high school seniors working out with us in spring football classes.”
Grossmont won the opener last season at Mesa, 49-21, as Cagle started his season with a 253-yard game. Moyer came in late in the contest and threw an 81-yard touchdown pass.
Jordan, along with second-year assistant coach, C.J. ARNOLD, hope to develop the young squad quickly.
“The trajectory of freshman learning curve is inevitable though. We just got to coach our asses off and get that curve to the curve,” Jordan said.
Grossmont’s defense is expected to be paced by sophomore defensive lineman CHRIS JAMES and returning linebacker LOGAN BAKER, out of Valhalla, who caught his only pass of the season for an 11-yard touchdown in the game versus the Olympians last year.
Mesa features former Monte Vista star XAVIER WADE, who had 55 tackles last year on the defensive line, but also can play standing up.
The Olympians roster also dots a few other former East County prep starts, including the former Monarchs JORDAN JOHNSON and RYAN SHIELD, former Grossmont Foothiller RICKY VALDEZ and former Santana receiving star ADAM CHILDRESS.
Jordan feels that early games come down to special teams, penalties and turnovers.
