Special to EastCountySports.com
SANTEE – TAYLOR BRYDON tallied 14 kills and BREANNA SMITH added five total blocks as the San Diego Christian women’s volleyball team came from behind to win in five sets against Life Pacific College Tuesday, 22-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-22, 15-12.
With the win, the Hawks improved to 4-0 on the season and their best start of the season since the 2002 campaign when then, Christian Heritage, started the season 5-0.
Trailing two sets to none, SDC needed to win the next three sets and didn’t start off with a bang. They trailed 10-7 early in the set. But they rolled off 10-straight points to grab a 17-10 lead en route to their set win.
MICHELLE MERCADO ended the set with a service ace.
In set four, the Hawks again found themselves trailing early on, this time 10-5. SDC pecked away at the deficit and took their first lead at 14-13 after an attack error from the Warriors. The set was later tied 21-21 before the Hawks ended the set with a 4-1 run. Brydon finished it off with a kill from HITOMI FUJIKURA.
The Hawks looked to be in full control of the decisive set. Smith and MELISSA PITTLEKAU started the set with a kill apiece before a BRENDA CAMPOS service ace to make the score 3-0 in favor of SDC. The Hawks were never really threatened in the fifth. Their slimmest lead was two early on and at 14-12. Another attacking error by LPC was their demise as the Hawks rallied for the win. LPC committed 24 errors in the game.
KELSEY HENDERSON and Pittlekau were also in double figures in kills with 11 and 10 respectively for the Hawks, while NINA WYER led with 22 assists
SDC takes their perfect record to Atherton on Friday as they play in the Menlo Invitational. The Hawks play Rocky Mountain College starting at 11 a.m.
