FRESNO – The Grossmont College Griffins are within a victory of their first community college state title following a 3-0 victory over Santa Rosa here on Sunday.
Grossmont freshman HAYDEN SHENEFIELD (8-0), out of El Camino Real High, pitched a six-hit shutout, striking out four and walking two. The righty threw 113 pitches, 73 of them for strikes.
The Griffins can win the state championship on Monday when they face Santa Rosa once again at Fresno City College’s John Euless Field at 11 a.m.
The Bear Cubs won an elimination game here Sunday night over El Camino, 8-5.
Grossmont (37-7-1) is attempting to become the first school from San Diego County to win the state crown.
The Griffins are 2-0 in the four-team tournament and would get a second chance should they lose.
The teams would play a deciding game for the California Community College Athletic Association State Championship title shortly after the end of the first contest.
Shenefield was in a pitcher’s duel for the first six innings with Garrett Hill.
Santa Rosa (36-10) put a couple of runners on in the third, but Shenefield and the Griffins escaped the threat with an interference-aided double play.
Meanwhile, Hill retired the first 10 Griffins he faced until REECE HERNANDEZ singled with one out in the fourth.
Grossmont scored in the sixth on a single by JUSTEN BURKEY that drove in MICHAEL DIFFLEY, who singled to right.
The Griffins scored two more in the seventh as Pacific Coast Atheltic Conference MVP CABOT VAN TIL singled to right, bringing home pinch-runner JALE SIM.
Hernandez brought home Diffley on a fielder’s choice back to the pitcher.
Sophomore DONAVON MCCRYSTAL, a right-handed sophomore out of West Hills High, is expected to start Monday’s championship game.
McCrystal, who is headed for UNLV next season, is 9-2 with a 2.30 ERA this season. The second-most used Griffins pitcher during the regular season has just two innings logged in Grossmont’s last six contests.
