LA MESA – The Grossmont Foothillers rallied from a four-run deficit in the first inning, winning their San Diego CIF Division I first round playoff game on a walk-off hit by NOAH LEVIN, stunning the upset-minded Poway Titans, 6-5, in eight innings at Joe Gizoni Field Wednesday.
The fourth-seeded Foothillers advanced to the second round of the double-elimination tournament where they will travel to play top-seeded St. Augustine at Hickman Field on Friday at 3:30 p.m. The Saints defeated Vista, 4-3, in nine innings on Wednesday on a steal of home.
Grossmont (16-14) trailed 5-1 through 5 1/2 when it rallied for three runs to stir up the comeback.
Junior TYLER PARENT (single), sophomore MAX FORD (walk) and junior AUSTIN ODOM (walk) scored in the frame, taking advantage of a couple of miscues by the battery. JESSE GARCIA added a RBI groundout.
Ford hit a clutch two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, scoring Levin, who drew a one-out walk.
In the eighth, senior JAYDEN LOMBARDO (3-for-5) led off with an infield single.
Four batters later, Levin singled to right on an 0-1 pitch for the game-winner, bringing in Lombardo.
Levin was 3-for-3 at the plate and also walked twice. Grossmont banged out 12 hits.
Starter JACKSON HULETT toughened after the rocky first and went seven innings for the Hillers.
Senior KANNON ROMERO earned the win with his one inning of work.
HELIX 6, CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC 1 – The host Dons scored in the first, but it was all Helix from there as senior left-hander CONNOR KONISHI had command of his fastball and pitched a complete game for the Highlanders in the San Diego CIF Open Division first-round playoff game.
ZACK OWENS doubled and scored in the second to tie the game for the Highlanders.
In the fourth, Helix’s BRANDON PETERSON singled and eventually came around to score on an error following a base hit by HUNTER ISBELL.
In the fifth, MATTHEW RICHARDSON drew a one-out walk, then two batters later, scored on a single to center by ERIK SMELKO.
Helix put up three in the sixth inning to assume command of the lead.
Owens singled and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Isbell.
With two out, CARLOS OQUITA doubled home Isbell, the Richardson drove him in with a single.
(7) Helix (21-10) will be at (6) Torrey Pines (26-7), at 3:30 p.m. on Friday in the second round.
SANTANA 13, STEELE CANYON 0 – Senior NOAH NUNEZ faced the minimum over six frames, allowing one hit, and crushed a three-run home run in the fifth inning as part of a 3-for-3 day at the dish, advancing the Sultans in the Division II winner’s bracket.
The second-seeded Sultans (20-9) will host the third-seeded Montgomery Aztecs (17-12) on Friday at 3:30 in Santee.
Meanwhile, the Cougars ran into a buzzsaw in Nunez and the Sultans after their hard-fought road win in the play-in game just 24 hours earlier. (10) Steele Canyon (20-11) travels to play at (6) Otay Ranch (15-14) at 3:30 on Friday in an elimination game.
Senior AIDAN RASMUSSON went 4-for-4 with four runs scored, a stolen base and a run batted in.
The Sultans strung together five-straight hits in the fourth, including a triple by senior TRISTEN SALINAS to score senior BROCK ELLIS (single) and a two-run single by senior COLTON CALVERT.
Nunez allowed a single to the Cougars’ BILLY TELLOUS, but that would be all, as he struck out six and walked none.
Nunez also drove in three runs, as well as, scored three times.
Santana drilled 17 base hits.
Senior LOGAN LINSCOTT worked a perfect seventh for the Sultans.
GRANITE HILLS 5, FRANCIS PARKER 2 – Hot-hitting senior BRADY JOSLYN slugged a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to snap a 2-all tie, lifting the Eagles to a win for the second-straight day.
Senior BILLY BROOKS followed in the footsteps of fellow senior MIKE KING just 24 hours earlier, turning in a season-best effort in relief.earned the win for Granite Hills, as he tossed 2 2/3 innings, allowing no runs, two hits, striking out five, and walking one.

Nevada-bound TREVOR HAZELHURST homered to lead off the sixth, tying the game.
Hazelhurst also got the start, going 4 1/3 innings, giving up two runs, three hits, and striking out five.
Joslyn had two hits for the third-straight game and extended his hitting streak to seven games, lifting his average to .325.
Granite Hills (14-16), the No. 7 seed, advances to face third-seeded Scripps Ranch (19-11) on the road on Friday at 3:30.
MONTE VISTA 5, OLYMPIAN 2 – The fourth-seeded Monarchs got a complete-game four-hitter from senior JUSTIN SCHWEIZER, advancing in the winner’s bracket of the Division IV playoffs with the home win over the Eagles.
Despite allowing a run each of the first two innings, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Schweizer was in command from there, surrendering four hits, while striking out four and walking one.
The Monarchs scored three in the third to erase the early lead of the visitors.
Senior ANDREW GONZALES drove in a pair with a line double to right, then junior DIEGO SANDOVAL added a RBI on a shot to center for a hit.
Junior ZACH MANUEL (double) and senior FRANCISCO GUTIERREZ (singled) drove in runs in the sixth, as the Monarchs extended their lead.
Monte Vista (19-11) will be at (1) Chula Vista (22-7) on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
TORREY PINES 10, CHRISTIAN 1 – The third-seeded Patriots ran into Torrey Pines’ Kyle Hurt (5-1), a USC-bound AFLAC All-American, who went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, while striking out 12 and walking one, sending Christian into the Open Division loser’s bracket.
Now the challenge for the Patriots will be to execute a road win on Friday (May 26) at Cathedral at 3 (time change from 3:30 p.m.), then get eight seniors back to school for graduation at 7.
“It’s going to be close,” Patriots coach MIKE MITCHELL said. “Same thing as last year, when we played San Marcos (and lost). We managed to get back for graduation at 6:55.”
Christian had a promising start on Wednesday as ZACH HOGUEISSON slammed a line drive home run to right field in the first inning on a 3-2 change-up.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the 5th inning when sixth-seeded Torrey Pines unleashed 5 runs, then followed with 4 in the 6th and topped it off with one in the 7th.
“We were just mentally tired,” Mitchell said. “We have eight seniors who are already out of school, and the rest of the team were in finals. It wasn’t a good combination.”
GARRETT NIELSEN went 2-for-2 for Christian (22-8).
Jake Boone drove in two runs for the Falcons to start the onslaught. He finished with four RBI.
