ESCONDIDO – The Foothills Christian Knights registered their sixth consecutive shutout Monday afternoon and rightly celebrated the outright championship in the Ocean League with a 3-0 conquest of host Orange Glen.
Junior TREVOR SMALLWOOD notched his second-straight whitewashing, striking out nine in a complete-game six-hitter.
Smallwood (3-3), who shut out Mount Miguel in his last start, lowered his season ERA to 0.73 (9 runs unearned).
“Trevor has done great for us all year,” Foothills Christian coach DAVE LEWIS said. “I keep wondering if this shutout streak we’re on is some sort of record.”
While the current CIF record book has no mark for consecutive shutouts by a team, Smallwood became only the 19th player in the section to record at least back-to-back shutouts.
Foothills Christian improved to 7-0 in the Ocean League and 21-8 overall with one game remaining at home against these Patriots on Wednesday at Barona Field. Second-place Calvin Christian is 4-2.
A scoreless duel until the sixth, the Knights broke through when JALANI BROWN singled and stole second, then senior JOSH GATES did the same, putting runners at second and third.
Senior JUSTIN EICHER lifted a sacrifice fly for the game’s first run.
FCHS added two more in the seventh when HUNTER NICKELL, a freshman, singled home a run, then two batters later, Gates drove in a run with his second hit of the day.
Foothills Christian will compete in the postseason in Division IV.
