EL CAJON – Mount Miguel High product ERIC DE LA ROSA singled to center with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning for the game-winning RBI as the Grossmont College Griffins defeated Cypress College, 3-2, in the opening game of their CCCAA Southern California Super Regional Friday at Noel Mickelsen Field.

De La Rosa’s hit scored NOAH STROHL, who had earlier walked in the inning and later moved up to third on a wild pitch that resulted in a strikeout for the second out of the inning.

De La Rosa, a 6-foot-4, 175-pound freshman, has hit safely in five-straight games, including all three playoff wins.

The second-seeded Griffins host the 11th-seeded Chargers in game two of the postseason tournament series today (Saturday) at 1 p.m. A third game, if necessary, would be Sunday, but other plans would seem better on Mother’s Day.

JUSTEN BURKEY hit a game-tying home run on Friday with two out in the sixth inning to even things up at 2-all.

Grossmont starter HAYDEN SHENEFIELD should get a ton of credit in this one, limiting the Chargers to just four hits over eight innings, getting to him for just two runs, including a leadoff home run to Garrett Calvert in the fifth inning which tied the game, 1-all.

Grossmont opened the scoring in the third on a sacrifice fly from DAVID MALDONADO. MICHAEL DIFFLEY (Granite Hills), who led off with a single, scored on the hit.

Cypress tied the game in the eighth on a walk, a stolen base followed by a throwing error, then a run-scoring single.

JAVIER DE LA TORRE relieved Shenefield in the top of the ninth and earned the win.

CABOT VAN TIL threw out the potential tying run at third base for the second out in the ninth inning. Then TREVOR BEARD threw out a would-be base stealer at second to end the game.
