EL CAJON (5-6-17) — The Santana Sultans maintained a one-game lead over the Helix Highlanders as they defeated the El Capitan Vaqueros in Friday’s (May 5) Grossmont Hills League game
Santana further gripped on its lead in the GHL by burying El Capitan, 13-1.
The Sultans hammered out 16 hits in the victory, which COLTON CALVERT, BROCK ELLIS and LOGAN LINSCOTT combined to spin a shutout of the Vaqueros.
Once again NOAH NUNEZ applied the hammer for Santana, going 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored. Nunez cracked 3 doubles in the game.
Calvert supplied an extra boost as he was 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.
It was basically a free-for-all for Santana, which included a home run in the 6-run 4th inning by TRISTEN SALINAS.
GROSSMONT 7, GRANITE HILLS 4 – Granite Hills, which has been slumping most of the season, got off to a positive start when SEAN ROSS smacked a leadoff home run in the first inning of Friday’s (May 5) Grossmont Hills League game.
TREVOR HAZELHURST singled on a line drive in the early inning to score JOSH VERDON.
It was short-lived, however, as the Eagles pitching staff kept dealing hits and Grossmont (5-3 GHL, 13-12) took advantage of them.
JAYDEN LOMBARDO blasted a home run in the bottom of the 3rd, scoring AUSTIN ODOM, who had got on base with a line drive to center to tie it up at 2-apiece.
Granite Hills showed some spark as Hazelhurst hit a line drive to right in the top of the 4th. TREVOR OMAHEN doubled on a line drive to center, scoring BRADY JOSLYN.
In the 5th inning, Grossmont erupted for 4 runs as Lombardo walked and JESSE GARCIA was hit by a pitch. JACKSON HULETT doubled on a line drive, scoring Lombardo, and CHRIS GIOVENGO to score Garcia. NOAH LEVIN walked and GIOVANI GIGANTI singled on a line drive to center and Hulett and Giovengo both scored.
In the 6th inning, Lombardo singled on a line drive to left. One out later Hulett got on base with an infield single, scoring Lombardo.
CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC 4, HELIX 3 – In a battle of Top 10 teams Friday (May 5) the Cathedral Catholic Dons skated by the Helix Highlanders 4-3 in non-league action in La Mesa.
After falling behind early Helix was able to score two runs in the 5th and one in the 6th but it was too little, too late had Cathedral taken a 4-0 lead.
ERICK SMELKO was 1-for-4 with a RBI, as was HUNTER ISBELL and CARLOS OQUITA.
AUSTIN KRETZSCHMAR was 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI, and MATTHEW RICHARDSON was 2-for-3 with a run scored. He also had a double as did Oquita and Kretzschmar.
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 15, ARMY-NAVY 0 – The Knights won by a 15-0 count for the second-consecutive day against Army-Navy, this time five Foothills Christian hurlers combined for a no-hitter.
The game was moved to West Hills High after standing water made the field at Barona unplayable.
Senior JOE KANG drove in four runs and senior BRADLEY BROWN added three RBI for FCHS.
Senior JOSH GATES and junior BAILEY LEWIS hit home runs for the Knights.
Kang pitched three innings for FCHS (4-0 Ocean, 17-8), striking out three.
