SAN DIEGO (4-28-17) — Christian hammered out 20 hits en route to a marathon 13-9 Western League victory over St. Augustine at Hickman Field on Thursday (Apr. 27) in 11 innings.
“This was a huge win for us,” said Patriots coach MIKE MITCHELL. “This is a race that will go to the finish.”
In Thursday’s games, all six teams in the Western League needed 10 innings or more to escape with a victory.
Nobody struggled more than the Patriots, who wrestled 11 frames to pull out the key win over the Saints.
Catcher DAVID JOSEPHSON, who usually submits to the designated hitter, came up big in this one as he was 3-for-3 with 4 RBI, including the game-winner. He also slugged his second home run with a man aboard, doubled, hit a sacrifice fly and scored 2 runs.
Not to be overlooked was third baseman JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD, who was 3-for-6 with a RBI.
The Patriots came out swinging all day long as CHASE WEHSENER was 4-for-7 with 4 RBI, while GARRETT NIELSEN was 1-for-5 with 2 RBI.
ZACH HOGUEISSON was 3-for-6 with 2 runs scored, and ETHAN CONTRERAS was 2-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI.
Wehsener and JAKOB BECK each had a stolen base.
Christian improved to 2-2 in the league standings, still 1 1/2 games out of first for now. The Patriots are 17-5 overall.
