SANTEE (4-23-17) —The Mount Miguel Matadors missed a chance for a major upset as they faced off against West Hills in the second game of a Saturday (Apr. 22) Grossmont Valley League doubleheader.
The Matadors scored five runs in the first inning to erase the short-term memory of a game one loss.
Instead, the Wolf Pack rallied then turned on the afterburners for a blowout win to established themselves as the team to beat in the Grossmont Valley League after improving to 5-0 following a sweep of the twin bill.
The Wolf Pack’s BRADEN SANFORD provided the spark in game two with 5 runs scored on 3 hits and 2 RBI.
NICO CAMACHO slammed a 3-run double for the Matadors in 1st inning. TREVOR DARBY belted a run-scoring double in the 6th to move the Matadors again on top. The Matadors made their lead stand up until the 6th inning when they simply ran out of pitching.
The Wolf Pack took advantage, pouring on the coal for 12 runs in the 6th to put the game away 17-6.
DYLAN CRAFT was 3-for-5 with 4 RBI for the Pack, and TREVOR COMMERFORD had a 2-run double in the big 6th, finishing 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI.
NOAH QUINTANA was 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and a RBI.
The Pack’s starter JONATHAN MAAT finished with five Ks, while starter RUBEN PRECIADO-TEJADA, of Mount Miguel, had five punchouts over three innings of work.
In Game 1, the Wolf Pack, wasted the early advantage when the Matadors finally equalized with three runs in the 7th inning. However, the Pack answered with a walk-off, game-winner in a 6-5 victory.
In the 2nd inning, CHRIS SCHROEDER walked and Sanford put down a bunt single. In an attempted pickoff move, which turned into a throwing error, Schroeder scored. Craft walked and Quintana lobbed a sacrifice fly to score Sanford.
In the 3rd inning, Quintana walked and one out later SAM HUGHES singled to left. A throwing error moved both runners up a base and TREVOR COMMERFORD walked. BRENDAN SHERWIN singled to left to score Quintana. TOMAS GAGLIANO singled to center to score both Hughes and Commerford.
A 2-run double by ANGELO ZERTUCHE in the top of the seventh was capped by a throwing error, allowing Zertuche to circle the bases on a three-run play. Zertuche would finish with three RBI.
In the final half-inning Gagliano singled and stole a base, Schroeder walked and RYAN TRAVOLI singled to center. After a walk to Quintana DUANE WITTMEIER reached on an error, scoring Schroeder.
Sophomore GAVIN KONDYRA pitched the final 3 1/3 innings to earn his first varsity win.
Sanford stole five bases on the day, giving him a season total of 21 – the fourth-highest total in Wolf Pack annuals.
With the sweep, West Hills (9-9 overall, 5-0 GVL) gained sole possession of first place in the GVL after co-leading Valhalla managed a doubleheader split of Monte Vista.
It is also the first 5-0 start in league play in West Hills history. Mount Miguel fell to 4-13 overall, winless in five GVL starts.
G1: VALHALLA 13, MONTE VISTA 0 – The Valhalla Norsemen (8-10, 4-0) took game 1 of a doubleheader from the Monte Vista Monarchs (10-8, 1-3) 13-0 in a Grossmont Valley League game at Eric Turgeon Field on Saturday (Apr. 22).
Norsemen senior and Cal State Bakersfield commit LEWIS DIRKES paved the way going 4-5 with 2 stolen bases. Dirkes singled in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th.
A six-run 3rd inning put the game in hand for Valhalla. Along with Dirkes, RYAN PEROT, TANNER SMITH, JACOB BARBA and MAX HAGEMAN all collected multiple hits.
RILEY O’SULLIVAN earned the win allowing three hits and striking out one. KYLE CASPER and JOSEPH INGRASSIA pitched scoreless relief. ZACH MANUEL took the loss for Monte Vista.
G2: MONTE VISTA 8, VALHALLA 6 – In game 2 of the doubleheader, the Monte Vista Monarchs (11-8, 2-3) topped the Valhalla Norsemen (8-11, 4-1) 8-6.
The game seemed to be that tail of two halves as Monte Vista would run out to a 8-0 lead by the half-way point. However, Valhalla would not go away easily and would score 6 in the second half of the game.
Monte Vista’s offensive hero was senior ANDREW GONZALES who went 3-4 with 6 RBI. Gonzales singled home DAVID GARCIA to open the scoring in the 1st. In the 2nd he added a three-run double and would then connect on a two-run home run in the 4th and Monte Vista was up 8-0.
The Norsemen would then take over the scoring and scored six times in 3 of the final 4 frames. RILEY O’SULLIVAN and KYLE CASPER would pace the Norsemen’s 10 hit attack and knocked in 2 runs each. The final rally fell short with tying runs on base in the 7th.
FRANCISCO GUTIERREZ earned the win going six and a third innings allowing six runs on ten hits striking out five.
G1: GROSSMONT 20, PATRICK HENRY 5
G2: GROSSMONT 8, PATRICK HENRY 1 – The Grossmont Foothillers made it look easy as they swept a non-league doubleheader from Patrick Henry 20-5 in game one and 8-1 in game two on Saturday (Apr. 22) in El Cajon.
The Foothillers have been struggling on the offensive end and finally erupted against the Patriots, pouring it on for 28 runs in the two games.
JAYDEN LOMBARDO chipped in with 3 hits and a run scored in the first game rout of the Patriots.
The Hillers had a home run derby to spark them in game one. Lombardo hit a homer in the first inning with a man aboard, AUSTIN ODOM slammed a round-tripper in the 3rd with 2 men on, and KANNON ROMERO slugged a grand slam in the 5th inning.
MAX FORD was 3-for-3 with a run and a RBI for the Foothillers in game two, and JACKSON HULETT was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.
