EL CAJON – The Grossmont College baseball team wrapped up an impressive week of pitching in a series sweep of San Diego City College on Friday.
Griffins’ ace DONAVON MCCRYSTAL threw a complete-game, five-hitter as Grossmont defeated City, 2-1, in the Pacific Coast Atheltic Conference series finale at Noel Mickelsen Field.
The Griffins gave up only two runs in the three-game set this week to the Knights, extending their latest winning streak to seven games.
Grossmont (17-1 PCAC, 22-6-1), ranked sixth in Southern California, swept the series from the Knights and currently gave the Griffs a two-game lead over Palomar (13-1 PCAC), but only in the win column.
Santana High product REECE HERNANDEZ (2-for-4) scored on an error in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 lead.
The Griffins added their second run in the second as Hernandez delivered a bases-loaded single to left field, scoring MICHAEL DIFFLEY (Granite Hills), who doubled.
As it turned out, that would be all the McCrystal would need.
The Knights were able to get to the former West Hills pitcher for a run in the fourth, as former Steele Canyon Cougar Wyatt Logan scored on a double.
The UNLV-bound McCrystal improved his season mark to 7-1 and lowered this season ERA to 2.10. He struck out five and walked one on the afternoon.
McCrystal has won his last six starts.
Grossmont’s CABOT VAN TIL (Patrick Henry) had a productive day to say the least, going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks. Griffins’ catcher TREVOR BEARD drew three walks on the day.
The Griffins play a pair of non-conference games next week (home vs. West LA and at Long Beach) in preparation for the big series with the Comets April 18, 20 and 22. Grossmont has the luxury of playing two of the three at home.
The home game against West LA is Tuesday at 2 p.m.
