LA JOLLA (3-4-17) — Despite a slow start Saturday, the Steele Canyon Cougars took charge to upend the host Bishop’s Knights 8-4 in Falcon Fiesta tournament play.
The Knights would take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but the Cougars in the top of the second inning cut into the lead.
The Cougars offense got going as they were able to get to the Knights as they scored a couple of runs to make it 3-2.
In the bottom of the second inning, Bishop’s would extend its lead with another run to make it 4-2.
Just like last year when they had quite a few come from behind victories, the Cougars didn’t panic as they were able to knot things up at 4-4 with a couple of runs in the top of the third inning.
Steele Canyon would take the lead for good in the top of the fourth with another run to make it 5-4 and they would a couple more in the top of the sixth and another in the seventh to round out their scoring.
Offensively for the Cougars, senior catcher MAKAYLA STROMENGER went 2-3 which included a home run, scoring 2 runs and also driving in a couple of runs.
She wasn’t alone in the home run department as JESSICA VENZOR (1-4, HR, 2 R, RBI, 2 SB) blasted one as well. She also scored a couple runs and drove in a run.
On the day, the Cougars had 6 RBI including 2 by GENTRY HOFFMAN (1-3, 2B, 2 RBI), who also hit a double.
Besides the home runs, Steele Canyon wreaked havoc on the base paths as they swiped 6 bases including 2 by both Venzor and Stromenger and also one by both AUDREY BAGGE (1-3, RBI, R, SB) and MASEN PEARLSTEIN (1-1, 2 R, SB).
In the circle for the Cougars was MAKAYLA MCCARTHY, who after the second inning, threw shutout ball the rest of the contest. On the day she allowed 4 runs, of which 3 were earned, on 3 hits, walked 7 and struck out 5.
