LA MESA (3-2-17) — When it comes to defense, no team can out-do the Helix Highlanders. These guys are legalized thieves. Put the ball on the floor and you’ll probably lose it.
Helix (26-5) strong-armed Westview 34-13 by halftime of the semifinal contest of the San Diego Section Division II playoffs, finishing with 70-35 demolishing of the Wolverines.
“We played outstanding defense, denied the 3-pointer,” said Helix assistant coach JOE HERNANDEZ. “They made only 12 baskets in the whole game. I credit our team for challenging them from any second shots.”
“We put the game away by our defense,” Hernandez added. “Our guys from the perimeter took advantage of our big guy in the middle (MILES NORRIS) and didn’t have to worry about second chance shots.”
JAYLEN ARNOLD anchored the Helix offense with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Norris had 15 rebounds and 10 points, while CARSON BAKER poured in 12 points.
“All our kids played an unselfish game,” Hernandez said.
Westview put together a modest effort early, trailing just 14-8 early on.
The Scotties built a 50-28 lead by the end of the third period.
Helix: Jaylen Arnold 16 (8 reb), Carson Baker 12, Miles Norris 10 (15 reb, 3 blk), Amari Green 9, Jaylen Hinson 8, Dylan Lee 5, Javon Davis 3, Maurice Holmes 2, Isaiah Wooden 2.
Helix will face Orange Glen at USD’s Jenny Craig Pavilion at 1 p.m. on Sat., Mar. 4 for the San Diego CIF Division II championship.
