SAN YSIDRO (2-5-17) — After being slapped around by the Helix Highlanders in Friday night’s (Feb. 3) Grossmont Hills League encounter, Steele Canyon rebounded to knock off host San Ysidro 71-56 in Saturday’s (Feb. 5) Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
It started out to be a long night for Steele Canyon, which fell behind San Ysidro 21-15 after the first quarter.
But coach DEREK STEPHENS’ ballclub refused to fold as GAGE SANDERS drilled in 19 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter. Sanders knocked down 5 three-pointers and was 4 for 4 from the free throw line.
TYLER SMITH poured in 16 points while KOBE SANDERS punched in 15.
Steele Canyon: Gage Sanders 27, Tyler Smith 16, Kobe Sanders 15, Jalen Sayles 5, Thomas Fishburne 5, Darrin Spence 3.
VALHALLA 45, MADISON 28 – The Norsemen defeated the Madison Warhawks in a Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Montgomery High on Saturday (Feb. 4).
Valhalla got an early morning start thanks to MALIQUE SHAW, who turned in a triple-double with 12 points, 15 rebounds, 11 blocks and an assist to bring the Norsemen back to life.
KAI KOMAKI contributed 13 points and TY SCHIMKE added 11 to the scoreboard.
RAMZI SULTAN crashed the boards with 10 rebounds and 2 blocks to go along with 7 points and 4 for 4 free throw shooting.
“It was nice to get a win going into the second half of league, to get some momentum going for us,” said Norsemen assistant coach SCOTT STURGEON.
“Malique Shaw played a great game tonight.”

MOUNT MIGUEL 71, OTAY RANCH 63 – Mount Miguel registered a key San Diego Section victory by knocking off host Otay Ranch in a Coaches vs. Cancer encounter on Saturday (Feb. 4).
DARIAN NORWOOD erupted for 31 points, including 9 treys, 12 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals as the Matadors took command with an 18-8 third quarter run.
Up and coming MIKEECE DUNBAR poured in 21 points, including 3 triples and 6 for 7 free throw shooting to go along with one rebound and one steal.
Always steady JAMES ALLEN tossed in 11 points including 5 for 6 free throw shooting. He also had 4 steals, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
“Dunbar hit two big threes for us in the fourth quarter and that made the difference,” said Mount Miguel coach JAY ROWLETT.
