SAN MARCOS (2-5-17) — San Diego Christian College baseball split a four-game series with the Cal State San Marcos Cougars over the weekend to open the season.
After splitting a season-opening doubleheader on Friday, the Hawks were swept on Saturday (Feb. 4).
The Hawks fell in Game 1 12-0 before winning the nightcap 4-1.
On Friday, SDC gave up nine runs in the first two innings but held the Cougars to just four runs the next 14.
SDC starter Jeremiah Wiley gave up nine runs, but only three were earned. SDC mustered just three hits in the first game. Brooks Fages led the team with two.
In game 2, although CSUSM scored the first run in the game in the third inning, SDC scored their first run of the game and the year as Vahn Bozoian‘s sac fly scored Justin Hawkins to tie the game 1-1.
In the sixth, the Hawks took their first lead as Zach Ambrose singled through the right side plating two. Caeden Barnes doubled in the seventh, which brought home the last run of the game scoring Steven Pico. Barnes led the team with three hits
Caleb Rodusky earned the win in Game 2 throwing six innings of 3-hit ball. He gave up one run but struck out seven while walking two. Logan Taylor came in for the save.
On Saturday, The Hawks lost Game 1 9-8 before dropping the nightcap 9-5. SDC held late leads in both of the games.
With the losses, SDC falls to 1-3 on the young season. The Cougars improve to 3-1.
SDC started the scoring off in Game 1 with three in the second. An error and a 2 RBI single by Justin Hawkins gave SDC a 3-0 lead. Joshua Sidley‘s RBI triple in the seventh gave SDC a 7-1 lead, looking in full control. But the Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh and five in the eighth to take a 9-7 lead heading into the final inning. Caeden Barnes‘ RBI double cut the deficit to one but it was too little too late.
Barnes and Hawkins had 2 RBI apiece. Pico led with three hits.
In game 2, in the bottom of the second, the Hawks scored three runs, leading 3-0. Tyler Schindel, Zach Ambrose and Bobby Mead all had RBI hits in the inning. Schindel later homered in the fourth, the first on the year for SDC, increasing the lead to 4-0.
But then again, the Cougars came back with a run in the fourth, three in the fifth and five in the sixth to put away SDC.
The Hawks will begin their conference play next weekend as they travel to Arizona Christian for a three-game series on Friday (Feb. 10) in Phoenix.
