EL CAJON (1-21-17) — Three boys basketball games were postponed due to leaks in two facilities, and a power outage at another, from the latest winter storm. No makeup dates have been announced as yet.
Christian High pulled a major upset Friday (Jan. 20) to bring the Patriots back into the Central League race.
Christian knocked off University City 57-49 to make it a 3-team race in the Central League.
The Patriots’ victory gave them position as the No. 3 team in the league. Coronado sits at the top of the circuit with 4-0 in league and 20-2 overall. University City slipped to 11-8, 4-1, while Christian improved to 13-6, 3-2.
“It was a close game,” said Patriots assistant coach TIM BROWN. “We pulled away at the end. We had four guys in double figures and did a good job of sharing the ball. It was a good team effort.”
JACKSON LARSEN had 14 points, DOMANIC SAFARTA pitched in 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds and led the long distance charge with 4 treys. NASHOM CARTER added 12 points and dished 7 assists, while DANIEL WELCH rolled a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Christian: Jackson Larsen 14 (6 reb, 3 ast), Domanic Safarta 12 (8 reb, 3 ast), NaShom Carter 12 (2 reb, 7 ast, 2 stl), Daniel Welch 10 (10 reb, 1 ast, 1 blk), Jack Mason 7 (4 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Javier Jimenez 2 (1 reb, 1 stl), Patrick Roberts (1 blk).
SANTANA 54, MONTE VISTA 37 – Santana ran the table against Monte Vista in a Grossmont Valley League encounter Friday night (Jan. 20).
The Sultans were led by NICK BERHALTER, who dumped in 15 points and JOHN BOBOF who pitched in another 13.
BRANDON SIMMONS added 12 points and 7 rebounds for Santana, which evened its league mark at 1-1.
ZACH LEGGITT pitched in 8 points, snagged 4 rebounds and handed out 1 assists, and TC SIMMONS grabbed 9 rebounds to go with 4 points.

EL CAPITAN 42, EL CAJON VALLEY 38 – Eighteen cheerleaders participated, compared to just 5 players for El Cajon Valley in Friday’s (Jan. 20) Grossmont Valley League contest with El Capitan.
Ironically, the Braves finished the game with only 4 players, but still managed a mild comeback from being down double-digits late.
“We were down 11 points and had a guy foul out with 4 or 5 minutes left,” said El Cajon Valley coach SCOTTY JAMES. “The kids played and gave their best effort. They still come to practice every day.”
The game was tied 22-all at halftime.
El Capitan surged to a 31-26 lead in the third period.
The Vaqueros lost their first 12 games of the season, but currently sit atop the Grossmont Valley League standings with a 2-0 mark, 2-13 overall.
