Freebies lift Pirates over Griffins at Charger Classic

CYPRESS (12-3-16) — The Grossmont College Griffin women’s basketball team dropped their first-round match-up against Orange Coast College 88-74 on Friday (Dec. 2) at the Lady Charger Classic at Cypress College.

KAMREE HARRISON (Mount Miguel) led all scorers with 26 points, as she came off the bench to turn in a marvelous performance. COURTNEY BRANCH (Patrick Henry) also had 12 points from a starter’s role.

On the stat sheet, the Griffins had a better shooting day (40.6 percent to Orange Coast’s 35.7 percent), had a better percentage from behind the arc (30 percent to 23.3). The two teams were even on the boards (OCC 37, GC 36). Grossmont had four more points in the paint.

What gave the Pirates (6-1) the win was the free throw line. Grossmont was 16-of-26 (61.5 percent), while Orange Coast was 31-of-38 (81.6 percent).

The Griffins will take on Santa Monica (4-5) in a consolation championship semifinal at 1:00 p.m. at Gym II on the campus of Cypress College today.
