CHULA VISTA (12-1-16) — Even a running clock over the final eight minutes could not slow down the Mount Miguel Matadors in Wednesday’s (Nov. 30) Matador Classic.
Mount Miguel stormed to a 71-31 lead after three quarters then it was a free-for-all for the clock and a 76-40 victory over host Bonita Vista.
SATERA BATES popped in 25 points, giving her 55 in her first two starts to lead the Matadors. She nailed a trio of 3-pointers and was 2 for 2 from the free throw line. She also hauled down 7 rebounds and handed out 4 scoring passes. For good measure she added a block to her totals.
DESTINI ANDERSON drilled in 22 points including 6 for 6 shooting from the charity stripe. She also corralled 8 caroms off the boards.
CAMARA DOUGLAS rolled a triple-double of 11 points, 10 rebounds, 12 assists and blocked a shot.
As a team Mount Miguel was 19 for 25 from the free throw line.
LAILA SMITH once again led the charge with 8 assists, giving her 20 in her first two times out.
“Laila Smith gets the ball to people in the right spots,” said Matadors coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL. “She had trouble doing that last year because she felt a lot of pressure.”
Mount Miguel’s defense put the clamps on Bonita Vista scoring star Shyla Latone, limiting her to only 8 points. Latone had scored 39 against Our Lady of Peace a night earlier, but this time she couldn’t break through the wall of TIAJA BENNETT, DEYONNA McBRIDE and MICHELLE CORLEY.
Mount Miguel will host a major event on Friday (Dec. 2) when it features Elementary School Day when they face OLP at 12:40. The youth of Spring Valley are invited to watch the game.
Mount Miguel: Satera Bates 25 (7 reb, 4 ast, 1 blk), Destini Anderson 22 (8 reb, 1 ast), Camara Douglas 11 (10 reb, 12 ast, 1 blk), Michelle Corley 5 (1 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Laila Smith 5 (1 reb, 8 ast, 1 stl), Nyssa Maga 5 (1 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), Tiaja Bennett 2, Deyonna McBride 1 (1 stl).
