SPRING VALLEY (11-30-16) — The host Mount Miguel Matadors wasted little time stepping into their season opener Tuesday night (Nov. 29) as they riddled Rancho Buena Vista 67-45 in a Matador Classic opener.
SATERA BATES set the tone for the Matadors, rolling in 30 points including 8 treys.
CAMERA DOUGLAS led the supporting cast with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and DESTINI ANDERSON rolled in 15 markers to go along with 6 rebounds.
You won’t find LAILA SMITH’s name in most box scores but she was a force for the Matadors, dealing a dozen assists to go along with 3 rebounds and 3 steals.
“She was really smooth with her passing,” noted Matadors coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL.
As well as the Matadors played, leading 55-29 heading into the final quarter, they stumbled in the 4th quarter.
“That’s the thing about this team,” Sandoval said. “It was a tale of two games. We played well for about a game and a half, then lost our grip.”
Five-foot-4 sophomore TIAJA BENNETT then helped Mount Miguel swing the momentum its way as she turned three steals into layups to break open the game.
“We need to develop a killer instinct because we let too many teams back into the game,” Sandoval said.
Mount Miguel: Satera Bates 30 (4 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl), Camara Douglas 15 (10 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Tiaja Bennett 6 (2 reb, 1 ast, 4 stl), Nya Maga 1 (1 ast), Laila Smith (3 reb, 12 ast, 3 stl), Michelle Corley (1 stl).
CHRISTIAN 36, TRI-CITY CHRISTIAN 32 – Despite being shutout in the 2nd quarter 6-0, Christian scrambled back to knock off Tri-City Christian 36-32 in the opening round of the Calvin Christian Tournament on Tuesday (Nov. 29).
In spite of the early scoring slump the Patriots trailed by only 3 points at the break. The 3rd quarter belonged to Christian, which claimed a 17-6 scoring edge.
The Patriots’ MARISSA GILES whistled in a trio of treys on her way to a 21-point finish.
HAYLEY ROBINSON hauled down a game best 10 rebounds to go along with 4 steals for Christian.
Christian will next play St. Joseph’s of Escondido in the second round of the tournament on Tuesday (Nov. 30) at 7:30.
Christian: Marissa Giles 21 (2 reb, 4 stl), Brooke Owens 6 (4 stl), Cipriana Hudson 3 (4 reb), Hayley Robinson 3 (10 reb, 4 stl), Jasmyn Crawford 3 (1 stl).
VALHALLA 41, CLASSICAL ACADEMY 32 – Leading scorers for the Norsemen in their Tuesday (Nov. 29) Calvin Christian Tournament victory over Classical Academy were DALIA GAZALLO and LISA DANNAN.
No statistics were reported.
WEST HILLS 53, RAMONA 39 – No other details reported.
