SANTEE – Mount Miguel junior running back SHEMAR GREENE scored four touchdowns and had over 350 yards of total offense in the Matadors’ 47-41 track meet-style win over the host Santana Sultans Friday night.
The Sultans scored on their second drive with a 5-yard touchdown run by senior running back BOBBY WALLACE behind a shove from senior lineman BRYCE MARTIN for an early lead in front of an energetic crowd at Community Stadium.
On the Matadors’ ensuing drive, Greene found a hole in the defensive line and sprinted down the field for a 67-yard touchdown, tying the game, 7-7.
Greene later broke through the line of Sultan defenders once again to score and give Mount Miguel a 14-7 lead.
Later in the first quarter, a long pass from Matador quarterback BENNY VALADEZ to wide receiver RICHARD MOORE resulted in a big play down to the 1. Mount Miguel scored on the next play to make it 21-7.
At the start of the second quarter, Greene broke past three defenders after picking up a delayed screen by Valadez behind his wall of blockers, before turning the play into a long 68-yard score.
It was a strong night for the Matadors’ offensive front, including ALEX LEMON, ANTHONY YARBOROUGH, EMIN SHERZAD and JASON HERNANDEZ.
The Sultans’ next drive would end up capped by a 27-yard TIMMY TISCHER field goal to make it 21-10.
The scoring didn’t stop there as the teams went into the locker room with the score, 41-27 in favor of the visitors.
Santana limited the Matadors to just one touchdown – in the third quarter – but the rally fell short.
Santana quarterback JOSH OEDEWALDT threw for 349 yards on 29-of-49 passing, while Wallace also turned in a huge night with 201 yards on 30 carries and three scores.
Santana senior AIDEN RASMUSSEN had 10 catches for 137 yards, while senior ANDERS TOLHURST had nine receptions for 83 yards, including a score.
BROCK ELLIS also hauled in six passes from Oedewaldt good for 73 yards and one touchdown.
Mount Miguel led 47-34 with five minutes left as Santana added a late score.
Santana’s DOMENIC DEHOYOS had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery to lead the chasing Sultans, while teammate ADAM VARGO had three tackles for loss.
Greene finished with 234 yards on the ground.
Mount Miguel will travel to face Otay Ranch in the opening round of the playoffs in Division 2 next Friday night.
Meanwhile, the Sultans were set to enjoy a bye in Division 4, getting the fourth-seed.
