EL CAJON (11-03-16) — This season Grossmont College will move into the Pacific Coast South Conference. The Griffins lost three key pieces from last year’s team but will bring back three players from last season for the 2016-2017 campaign.
Grossmont College (13-15 overall a year ago), participated last season in the Pacific Coast North Conference. Last year the Griffins started strong with a 9-4 record but wound up going 4-11 the rest of the way and finished 1-5 in the Pacific Coast North Conference.
Shooting guard DANIEL McCOWN (6-foot-1) returns to the Griffins. As a freshman, McCown was the second leading scorer on the team and made 59 three pointers in his freshman season. McCown averaged 11.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
CORWIN FEERICK (6-foot-8) is a stretch four man that averaged 7.1 points and 3.9 rebounds in his freshman year. Feerick had a season high 21 points against Cuyamaca and is a strong rebounder.
Forward LEANDRE POWELL didn’t start any games last season, but averaged nearly five points and three rebounds off the bench playing under nine minutes a game.
RONALD BLAIN leads the list of newcomers who may impact Grossmont for the upcoming 2016-17 season. The 6-foot-5 Blain redshirted at San Diego Christian.
BRYCE PARSONS (6-3, West Hills) and JOSH MORAN (6-4, Serra) will also suit up for the Griffins this season. Parsons was an All-East County first team pick. Also on the Griffins is Parsons’ Wolf Pack teammate from last season KYLE RUIZ, a 6-foot-1 guard.
Grossmont lost key pieces from last season, but the Griffins return two solid nuggets that contributed to a team that won 13 games. Grossmont should be in the top half of the conference and battle for second place as they make the transition to the Pacific Coast South Conference in the 2016-17 season.
The Griffins open the season on Thursday night (Nov. 3) in Palm Desert in the annual College of the Desert Classic against Long Beach City College.
