EL CAJON (10-29-16) — Grossmont College succumbed 57-55 to the Saddleback Gauchos Saturday (Oct. 29) at Mashin-Roth Field despite the 5 touchdown passes completed by Griffins freshman quarterback BRAD CAGLE.
The Griffins had plenty of chances to win but miscues left and right short-circuited their bid for a victory.
“I felt good for the first game back,” said Cagle, who missed two games and a bye with a concussion. “I got hurt on the tenth play against Fullerton (lost by the Griffins 79-18). I was running backward looking for a receiver, but before I could throw the ball they took me down.”
Cagle recorded 27 completions of 53 attempts for 573 yards and 5 touchdowns against the Gauchos (7-1, 2-1 Southern Conference).
Griffins receiver ADRIAN TOLBERT put his gloves on and caught 5 passes for 103 yards and 3 touchdowns against the Gauchos.
Ironically Tolbert’s high school career at Castle Park focused on the Wing-T offense.
“It was really strange because I actually had 1000 yards receiving,” said Tolbert of his high school career. “But I’m so glad to be over here (at Grossmont). I adapt fast. I have no regrets for coming to Grossmont. The offense here is much more receiver-friendly.”
For Grossmont the game started in disaster mode as the Griffins fumbled the opening kickoff at the 6-yard line, and that led to a Saddleback touchdown.
The Griffins (4-4, 0-3 SCFA) counterpunched in the first period after a fumble recovery by RODERICK WOODS to set the stage for an 11-yard TD pass from Cagle to Tolbert.
DOMINICK GRIMM booted a 40-yard field goal to give the Griffins a 10-8 lead by the close of the first quarter. He added a 31-yard field goal in the second quarter.
MARCELLUZ SMITH scored on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Cagle in the third quarter. JABRIL CLEWIS pulled in a 6-yard scoring toss from Cagle in the same quarter.
After that the Griffins, trailing 29-27, found themselves playing catch-up in the fourth quarter, where both team scored 4 touchdowns. The scoring never left up as 16 touchdown were registered between the two teams and two field goals.
KEITH FULTON scored twice in the minute and a half for Grossmont as the Griffins kept battling.
As explosive as this offensive exhibition turned out, Grossmont collected 4 fumble recoveries – by LANCE LEOTA, GABE OILAR and KURTIS BROOKS including the one by Woods.
IKEY POUMELE and QUANTARIUS BOONE smothered a sack apiece for the Griffs.
