2016 EAST COUNTY FOUR-YEAR FOOTBALL STANDOUTS

EL CAJON (10-17-16) — Grossmont High School graduate ANTHONY LAWRENCE delivered four touchdown passes on 259 yards by completing 19 of 29 passes as the USD Toreros downed Drake 38-7 Saturday (Oct. 15) in Des Moines.

Junior wide receiver SERGIO BAILEY (Grossmont College/Eastern Michigan) caught 8 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown in a 27-20 win over Ohio. He now has 34 receptions for 472 yards on the season.

Redshirt junior SPENCER HAVIRD (Valhalla) appeared in his 30th consecutive start at Gardner-Webb Saturday (Oct. 15), registering 10 tackles in a 17-7 loss to No. 16 FCS-ranked Coastal Carolina.

Senior defensive end GARY MARSHALL (Helix) nailed down 5 tackles in Marshall University’s 27-21 victory over Florida Atlantic.

At Oregon State, LEEPO NAPOLEON (Helix) made 4 tackles as the Beavers lost 19-14 to the Utah Utes, while teammate SETH COLLINS (Granite Hills) made 2 catches for 17 yards in the Oregon State loss.

The BYU Cougars won their third straight by knocking off Mississippi State 28-21. NICK KURTZ (Valhalla/Grossmont College) caught a Cougars’ team-high 7 passes for 62 yards.

In a 41-38 victory over Hawaii, UNLV receiver MEKHI STEVENSON (Helix) caught 4 passes for 31-yards. He hauled in a critical 12-yard pass on a third-and-10 to set up a game-score when the Rebels were down, 31-24, early in the fourth.

LAWRENCE DICKENS (Steele Canyon/Marist College) caught 3 passes for 37 yards and a touchdown against Morehead State, and returned 5 kickoffs for 117 yards for the Red Foxes.

RAYVON OWENS (Christian) of Willamette had 2 interceptions and 2 tackles for the Bearcats in a 40-0 loss to Linville.

There were East County players aplenty in the Asuza Pacifc win over Humboldt State on Saturday:
WILLIE FAIR (Steele Canyon) made 7 tackles and an interception for Azusa Pacific in the Cougars’ 45-13 victory, while JABRION BURNSIDE (Helix) made 6 tackles for AP.
JOHN TODD (Valhalla) had 3 catches for 58 yards for Humboldt Stats in a loss to Azusa Pacific, while fellow WR NICK SEXTON (Christian) caught 2 passes for 24 yards.

Meanwhile, the East County-laden Dixie State Trailblazers came up with its first win ever over a nationally ranked team in an upset 38-31 victory over No. 23 ranked Colorado Mesa.
All the East County boys play on defense:
MIKE JONES (Mount Miguel) had 3 tackles for Dixie State, while TAJ BROOMFIELD (West Hills) registered 2 tackles for Dixie in the win. MALCOLM JACKSON (Mount Miguel) logged one tackle for Dixie State in the win over Colorado Mesa.
Meanwhile, on the opposing sideline, VIRNEL MOON (El Cajon Valley) had one catch for 8 yards for Colorado Mesa.

MAURICE PAYNE (Monte Vista /Grossmont College) made 6 tackles, one for loss, and 2 sacks as the Tabor College Blue Jays lost to Wesleyan College 45-42.

Receiver ANTHONY JACKSON (El Cajon Valley/Grossmont College) made 3 catches for 33 yards. He also had a 41-yard scoring reception for the Bethany College Swedes in their 28-20 victory over Southwestern College.
