SANTEE – Santana High had the county’s attention with a televised morning pep rally in the school’s gym, but West Hills turned the spotlight to the visitor’s side Friday night (Sept. 2) with a 31-20 victory at the east Santee campus.
The Wolf Pack first took the Jack Dale Cup down Mast Blvd., then returned home with it two and-a-half hours later with an early defensive shellacking. West Hills leads the all-time series 20-8.
Santana had three fumbles in the first quarter and threw an interception in the second quarter, as West Hills rolled up an early 21-0 lead.
After a fumble, West Hills senior JOVAN BEA scored on a 31-yard touchdown run after bouncing out to the right side thanks to the block from senior PHILIP CORNELIUS, and scampering down the left side and into the end zone.
Soon after, senior MITCHELL CARLIN caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback HAYDEN ROACH. Roach simply floated the short forward screen to the right side, and Carlin found plenty of room after Cornelius, Bea and junior RYAN CLARK all threw blocks up field on the delayed come-back route.
Roach later found senior tight end JASON VILLASANA for a third touchdown before the first quarter was over.
West Hills led 21-0 in the third quarter when BOBBY WALLACE scored from five yards out to finally get the Sultans on the board. Wallace bounced to the outside after the key block from lineman DYLAN BROWN to finish off a 6-yard score.
CADE WAVER made a 21-yard field goal for West Hills to make it 24-7.
Santana quarterback JOSH OEDEWALDT rolled to his left and threw to ANDERS TOLHURST near the back left of the end zone for a touchdown from 11 yards out for the Sultans to close the game to 24-14.
But Roach added a 2-yard rush behind Cornelius once again, as well as fullback GRIFFIN GUINN, as West Hills won the rivalry game for the fifth-straight year. Wallace added a consolation touchdown run from three yards out in the fourth quarter for the Sultans behind Brown and senior BRYCE MARTIN.
“We had a great week of practice,” Roach said. “We came into this game super confident. We knew what we had on offense and our defense played a great game.”
TANNER SUTTON had a pass breakup on the game’s final play for West Hills.
Oedewaldt threw for 210 yards for Santana, while Wallace had 120 yards on 24 carries.
Tolhurst had 10 receptions for 106 yards, while AIDEN RASMUSSEN had five catches for 56 yards and BROCK ELLIS had four catches for 48 yards.
Senior SPENCER GULIHUR led Santana with eight tackles, while senior DOMENIC DEHOYOS had seven wrap-ups.
