EL CAJON (7-24-16) — ANDREW BROWN is into a bullet fast debut for the Philadelphia Phillies Gulf Coast Rookie League team.
The Granite Hills graduate, who was named 2016 EastCountySports.com Player of the Year, has made six appearances for the Phillies rookies. He has posted a 14-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio, with a 0-0 record in 12 1/3 innings.
On another Granite Hills front, graduate TRENTON BROOKS was off to a fast start, hoisting his average to .375 for the Arizona League Indians. He has, however, seen his average dip to .254.
University of Arizona College World Series star KEVIN GINKEL, from El Capitan, has a 3.00 ERA in six games with Hillsboro, of the short-season class-A Northwest League. The Diamondbacks’ prospect has eight strikeouts in nine innings.
Former Grossmont Foothiller MARK VASQUEZ has looked sharp in the Northwest League, putting up a 1.84 ERA in 14 1/3 innings, spanning 10 appearances. He has a 2-0 record with 21 strikeouts and just six walks for the Spokane Indians, who are actually a Rangers’ affiliate.
AVERY TUCK, a graduate of Steele Canyon, has turned down a chance to play for the Houston Astros and will begin his career with the San Diego State Aztecs.
