LA MESA (6-16-16) — Helix High senior SCOTTIE YOUNG has earned a scholarship to the University of Arizona. He turned down offers from Colorado, Washington State and San Diego State to accept a full ride with the Pac-12 Wildcats.
The 6-foot, 190-pound safety earned First Team All-East County honors as well as First Team All-Grossmont Hills League defensive back.
“It’s been an honor to receive all the accolades that have come my way,” Young said on Twitter Wednesday night. “After talking with my family, I have decided that I will be continuing my education and my football career at the University of Arizona.”
National scouts had Young at the top of the awards list at No. 55 nationally, No. 9 in the West and No. 5 in California as a senior safety product.
The versatile Young caught 10 passes for 394 yards and 2 touchdowns last season for the Highlanders. He also intercepted 2 passes for 50 yards.
Young said his final choice was a mixed vote.
“Being blessed with all the great support from my family, friends and coaches I have work my whole life for this and I am finally getting the chance to fulfill my dreams,” he said in his Twitter announcement. “I’ll be starting new chapters in my life.”
