SANTEE – The Santana Sultans sidestepped visiting Patrick Henry, 5-1, in Friday’s (May 27) San Diego Section Division II playoffs to set up a rematch against Christian on Saturday (May 28) in Santee at 11 a.m.
Remember, the top-seeded Sultans (25-4) were clobbered by Christian 12-2 in round one action.
NOAH NUNEZ made it look easy as he posted his 9th win without a loss in a complete game effort.
Neither team could furnish much offense, as Nunez surrendered 3 hits against the Patriots.
Two Patrick Henry pitchers allowed 2 earned runs in the losing cause.
The Sultans were led by REECE HERNANDEZ who was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. He also stole a base.
But hits came at a premium for the two teams, which combined for only 8 hits in the contest.
AIDAN RASMUSSON turned in a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
SAN MARCOS 7, CHRISTIAN 4 – Third-seeded Christian (19-11) kept its playoff hopes alive despite dropping a 7-4 decision to San Marcos (21-7-1) in Friday’s (May 27) Division II playoff action in the double elimination portion of the tournament.
Four Christian errors led to 6 unearned runs for San Marcos.
Pitchers CAMDEN BESSONE, LUKE GENTRY, JOE MARKOWICZ and BRAD JEREMIAH combined to surrender only 8 hits but four Christian errors undermined the Patriots’ efforts.
It was a long day for the Patriots, who fell behind 5-0 after three innings.
Christian scored in the fourth inning on a solo home run by CHASE WEHSENER. GARRET NIELSEN slugged a solo homer to right center field which left the Patriots still in a comeback mode. Wehsener finished 3-for-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI.
ZACH HOGUEISSON – 2-for-4 with an RBI single – slashed a round-tripper in the sixth inning.
“This was one of the worst games we’ve ever played,” said Christian coach MIKE MITCHELL. “We popped up 12 times.”
Christian will face Santana in Santee on Saturday (May 28) at 11 a.m. in a third round game.
