CARLSBAD (5-28-16) — The Grossmont Foothillers turned loose junior Ironman JACKSON HULETT in Friday’s (May 27) San Diego Section Open Division.
Hulett was up to the challenge as he fired his 8th complete game and his 7th win in eight decisions as Grossmont eliminated La Costa Canyon, the No. 1 ranked team in the section.
“I take pride in throwing complete games,” noted Hulett. “The key is I keep a low pitch count early in the game.”
Grossmont (21-11) squeezed out a 2-1 victory over the Mavericks (23-7), who dropped two straight decisions in post-season play and now will watch the remainder of the tournament from the sidelines.
Hulett allowed only one run and 5 hits as he walked 3 and struck out 2.
“I had more energy and adrenalin this time around because I have confidence in my defense,” (which played error free ball).
“He embraces the chance to face the No. 1 team in the county,” said Grossmont coach JORDAN ABRUZZO of Hulett. “The tougher the challenge the more he enjoys it. This game had a championship atmosphere and Hulett welcomed the chance to compete.”
La Costa Canyon took a third inning lead on an RBI single by Ryan Orr.
Grossmont counter-punched an inning later, scoring 2 runs off Brendan Kawaja. JESSE GARCIA supplied what proved to be the game-winning blow on a 2-run single.
“This is actually the second time we’ve beaten them,” said Hulett, referring to the Foothillers’ 4-3 nine inning victory in the Lions Tournament. “I’m never nervous, I just go out and play the game,” added Hulett, who is bound for St. Mary’s in Moraga.
Grossmont will host La Jolla Country Day in an elimination game on Saturday (May 28) at 11 a.m. at Joe Gizoni Field. These two teams met earlier in the season with the Torreys claiming a 3-1 victory.
“We are a different team now,” said Hulett. “I’m sure they are too.”
