LAKESIDE (5-14-16) — At one time earlier in the season it appeared that Granite Hills was going to run away with the Grossmont Hills League flag. But the challengers have grown by the day.
As it stands now three teams are in the running for the top spot.
Thanks to the hard-nosed pitching of ANDREW BROWN who scattered 5 hits in Granite Hills’ 2-0 victory on Friday (May 13) at El Capitan, four teams are within two games of first place in the GHL race.
JAKE FENN hoisted a sacrifice fly to score DARIEN COSSIO in the second inning to get the Eagles underway. ANDREW BROWN came in on a throw from the outfield to score the Eagles’ second run.
STEELE CANYON 8, VALHALLA 3 – Steele Canyon overcame a 3-0 deficit and rolled victorious to the finish line in Friday’s (May 13) Grossmont Hills League encounter at Valhalla.
The Cougars’ MICHAEL FITCH pitched six innings of one hit ball in relief to hoist his record to 4-0. He allowed only 2 walks and struck out 2.
JOSH ESQUIBEL provided success in the meat of the Steele Canyon batting order, going 3-for-4 including a double and a stolen base.
MATTHEW BRINKMEIER chipped in with a double, as did KANE FIEDLER, LUKE ARIAS and RILEY O’SULLIVAN.
HELIX 13, GROSSMONT 4 – CONNER KONISHI pitched 5 innings and allowed only one earned run while striking out 2 as he hoisted his record to 8-1 in Friday’s (May 13) Highlanders’ victory over Grossmont in a Grossmont Hills League contest.
Konishi received plenty of support as HUNTER ISBELL, AUSTIN KOVALCHECK, and BRANDON PETERSON all homered for the Highlanders.
On the flip side JAIME ARREOLA and JAYDEN LOMBARDO hit home runs for Grossmont. Lombardo’s was his 4th round tripper.
The game turned into a knock-down Pier 9 brawl in a battle of longballs. Both teams regarded on the longball.
“I don’t see our team as a home-run hitting group,” said Helix coach COLE HOLLAND. “But we have won our last three series and that’s a plus. You couldn’t find better parity than this league. But our destiny is in our own hands.”
CHRISTIAN 12, LINCOLN 0 – CHASE WEHSENER drove in 4 runs with 3 hits to send Christian to a lopsided victory over Lincoln in Friday’s (May 13) Central League encounter.
NATE CAZARES drove in a pair of runs with a triple and JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
Four Christian pitchers contributed to the victory including CAMDEN BESSONE, who toiled 4 innings and allowed only one hit, striking out 3 as he posted his 2nd win without a defeat.
“It’s pretty tough to play back to back games like this,” said Christian coach MIKE MITCHELL of his Patriots, who outscored Lincoln 29-1 in two games.
The Patriots must eye the future, which includes two meetings with front-running Coronado that will decide the Central League championship.
SANTANA 2, MONTE VISTA 0 – One of the best kept secrets in East County is senior right-hander DAULTON BARRY.
The stealth right-hander has all the numbers delivering the baseball. In 52 2/3 innings Barry has posted a 6-2 record with a 0.66 ERA for the Sultans.
His numbers don’t stop there however, as he has accumulated 66 strikeouts so far this season.
Barry faced only 23 batters in his complete game effort in Friday’s (May 13) Grossmont Valley League victory over the Monarchs.
The hardluck loser for Monte Vista was ANTHONY ROSARIO who surrendered only 6 hits and one earned run while striking out 3 in a complete game outing.
Santana scored all the runs it needed in the first inning, as TRISTEN SALINAS singled and advanced to second on an errant pick-off attempt. After REECE HERNANDEZ singled, Salinas scored on a sacrifice fly by NOAH NUNEZ.
In the sixth inning Salinas doubled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Hernandez.
WEST HILLS 3, MOUNT MIGUEL 0 – West Hills remains on the heels of Santana in the Grossmont Valley League race heading into the final week of the regular season.
The only game left on West Hills’ slate is a season-ending showdown against Santana on Thursday (May 19) at the Wolf Pack’s den.
Santana (9-1), meanwhile, will face Mount Miguel on Tuesday (May 17) in an encounter before they play the Wolf Pack (9-2).
If the Sultans can sack the Matadors they will lock up nothing less than a co-championship. A victory over the Pack will give Santana an outright claim to the title.
The Pack made the most of 5 hits in Friday’s (May 13) blanking of the Matadors.
No report was received from Mount Miguel.
TRI-CITY CHRISTIAN 4, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 2 – Ocean League-leading Foothills Christian took a step out of the conference circuit only to trip up against Tri-City Christian under the Friday the 13th (of May) jinx.
Stubbing their toe in a non-league encounter at MiraCosta College the Knights will survive to play another day in the race for the Division 5 championship.
