LAKESIDE (10-11-16) — The El Capitan Vaqueros climbed back into the Grossmont Hills League race by slipping past the Grossmont Foothillers 5-4 in nine innings on Tuesday (May 10).
The victory positioned the Vaqueros, the Foothillers and Helix into a three-way tie, two games behind front-running Granite Hills.
It took El Capitan into the ninth inning to knock off Grossmont on a walkoff single by KENNY OLHAUSER.
BAILEY ROBERSON pitched three innings of clutch relief to pick up the victory.
Grossmont’s JACKSON HULETT was the hardluck loser as he spun seven innings while striking out 8, allowing 3 earned runs and 3 walks.
JASON MOORMAN led the Vaqueros’ assault with a double and his second home run of the season to drive in 2 runs.
JAKE MEDFORD pitched in with 2 hits, 2 runs and an RBI in five at-bats for the Vaqueros, while MICHAEL LARWA smashed a pair of doubles to score 2 runs.
GRANITE HILLS 1, STEELE CANYON 0 – Those arriving late at Tuesday’s (May 10) Grossmont Hills League game at Steele Canyon could have missed all the action as Granite Hills scored in lightning fashion.
In their first turn at bat the Eagles got a double from SEAN ROSS, who swiftly stole third. That set the stage for JOSH VERDON’s sacrifice fly.
TREVOR HAZELHURST pitched six innings of two-hit shutout ball to earn his 2nd win in three decisions for the Eagles. ANDREW BROWN came out of the bullpen to strike out all three batters to earn his second save.
It was more frustration for Steele Canyon which spun its second straight 2-hitter, only to come up short.
Cougars pitcher TREVOR ROW pitched a complete game 2-hitter, allowing only the first inning run while striking out 7 and walking 4.
HELIX 6, VALHALLA 3 – The Helix Highlanders clawed their way into a 3-way tie for second place in the Grossmont Hills League after knocking off Valhalla in Tuesday’s (May 10) circuit encounter.
The Highlanders now share second place with Grossmont and El Capitan at 6-4. Granite Hills leads the GHL at 8-2.
JACK STRONACH came up with another big day with the bat, going 3-for-4 with a double, 2 RBI and a stolen base to pace the Highlanders.
Helix took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. With one out Stronach singled to left. With two outs he stole second and scored on a double by MATTHEW RICHARDSON. It was Richardson’s 3rd game-winning RBI.
Helix’s MICHAEL BROGAN, who was 3-for-4 in the contest, launched a double to right field in the fourth. AUSTIN KRETZSCHMAR laid down a bunt single with Brogan taking third. Two outs later Kretzschmar stole second. Stronach singled to center, scoring both Brogan and Kretzschmar.
The Highlanders added another run in the fifth. Richardson singled to left and stole second. He scored on a base hit by ROMAN PADILLA.
In the sixth inning Stronach found home plate again, as he doubled to right, advanced to second on a ground out by CONNER KONISHI. Stronach scored on a wild pitch.
Valhalla scored all of its runs in the fifth inning. COLE HOWARD singled to right. One out later JOSH HEIDER doubled to left. With two outs LEWIS DIRKES singled to left to score Howard. CJ BROWN singled to left to score Heider, then it was COLE HENDERSON’s turn as he rifled a single to left field to score Dirkes.
KEATON CHASE pitched five innings to earn his 3rd win in five decisions, scattering 7 hits, allowing 3 runs, 3 earned, one walk and 4 strikeouts for the Highlanders. JORDAN JACKSON pitched two shutout innings in relief to earn his first save.
MONTE VISTA 8, MOUNT MIGUEL 2 – Monte Vista enhanced its playoff position as seven Monarchs contributed to a 9-hit attack in a Grossmont Valley League victory over Spring Valley rival Mount Miguel on Tuesday (May 10).
The Monarchs scored 7 runs in the first three innings to take command of the festivities.
In the first inning FRANK GUITERREZ singled to right and ANDREW GONZALES walked. ANTHONY ROSARIO hit a hard ground ball to left field, scoring Gutierrez. BRENDAN COLLIS lined a single to center to score Gonzales. ANTHONY ROSARIO also scored in the inning.
The usually meager Monte Vista offense continued to produce in the second inning. Frank Gutierrez singled to right and scored JUAN GUTIERREZ, who had walked. JORDAN FRANKEN reached base on an error. Andrew Gonzales hit a line drive single to right to score Gutierrez.
In the third inning Collis singled in a run for the Monarchs, and DIEGO SANDOVAL also doubled in a run.
For Mount Miguel MIGUEL OROZCO was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. JUAN SANDOVAL was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double.
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 28, ROCK ACADEMY 1 – Foothills Christian rolled Rock Academy for 26 hits to move into a three-way tie for the Ocean League lead on Tuesday (May 10) at Barona.
JUSTIN EICHER led the charge for the Knights, going 4-for-5 with a triple, 7 RBI, 5 runs scored and 3 stolen bases.
The hit parade continued with TRISTIN BARLING who was 4-for-5 with a double, 3 runs scored and 3 RBI.
BAILEY LINK was 3-for-3 with a triple, 5 runs scored and 2 RBI.
There was seemingly no way for the Warriors to put the brakes on the Knights.
EZRA SIMS had 3 hits as did KONNER VON DER LIETH and TREVOR SMALLWOOD. Smallwood and Von Der Lieth also chipped in with 3 RBI.
Three Foothills Christian pitchers capitalized on the attack. LIAM CAREY, Eicher and Barling combined to give up 11 hits but it hardly mattered. Carey improved his record to 2-1.
WEST HILLS 15, EL CAJON VALLEY 1 (5 inn.) – Visiting West Hills stayed on the heels of Santana in the race for the Grossmont Valley League championship by burying host El Cajon Valley in a five inning game on Tuesday (May 10).
The Wolf Pack (15-8, 7-2) trails idle Santana (20-3, 7-1) by half a game.
As the twilight is approaching for the league championship, West Hills has a chance to either tie or win the GVL title in the final game of the regular season when they host the Sultans on Thursday (May 19).
JONATHON MAAT and GRANT MICKELSON combined to pitch a 2-hitter against the hapless Braves.
DANIEL ALVAREZ was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI to spark the Wolf Pack.
BRADEN SANFORD was 1-for-2 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored, while SAMMY SANDEZ was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI.
COLTON YBARRA also plated 3 runs.
The Wolf Pack broke the game open with 8 runs in the second inning.
