LA MESA (5-4-16) — Helix High pitcher JACK STRONACH realized what was at stake when he toed the rubber in Tuesday’s (May 3) Grossmont Hills League encounter against Steele Canyon. That would be a chance to climb back into the GHL title race.
So coach COLE HOLLAND delivered his one-two pitching punch of Stronach and CONNOR KONISHI to make sure that the Highlanders were able to continue their charge for the title.
Holland’s strategy paid off as Stronach (3-1) and Konishi combined for a 4-hit shutout. Konishi was awarded his second save as the Highlanders blanked the Cougars 2-0.
“I’m a fast worker and I try to keep the tempo up,” said Stronach who is 3-1. “Our pitching has been there all year so our offense needs to ignite the spark.”
Stronach ignited the spark when he blasted his 4th home run of the season in the first inning.
“I always try to take it deep if I can,” said UCLA bound Stronach.
In the sixth inning Konishi who was 3-for-3 scored on a double by HUNTER ISBELL.

EL CAPITAN 8, VALHALLA 0 – Those arriving late at Tuesday’s (May 3) Grossmont Hills League encounter between El Capitan and host Valhalla would have missed the show.
That’s because the Vaqueros scored all 8 runs in the contest in the top of the first inning and then cruised to the finish line.
The victory-starved Norsemen could not put up a fight against three El Capitan pitchers – TRISTAN DUNCAN, JORDAN FRANTZ and KENNY OLHAUSER – who limited the Norsemen to 2 hits.
The Vaqueros put together the knockout punch beginning with Olhauser getting hit by a pitch. He stole second base and scored on a base hit by VICTOR CARLINO, who logged the game-winning hit. Capping the rally was Carlino’s double to center field which scored SEAN DUNN, MICHAEL LARWA and Olhauser.
Carlino finished with 4 RBI.

SANTANA 14, MOUNT MIGUEL 2 – A pair of 6 run innings enabled Santana to register a knockout of Mount Miguel in Tuesday’s (May 3) Grossmont Valley League title race.
Three Santana pitchers combined to pitch a 5-hitter. COLTON CALVERT worked 5 frames, allowed only 4 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 7 to earn his 2nd win of the season.
MITCHELL MILLER provided the offensive spark for Santana as he went 3-for-3 with 4 RBI. AIDAN RASMUSSON drove in 4 runs with a 2-for-5 batting effort.
In the first inning TRISTEN SALINAS led off with a home run. NOAH NUNEZ followed with a base hit as did JACOB ODENKIRK, who also stole a base.
That set the stage for a 2-run single by Rasmusson. BROCK ELLIS pounded an RBI double and scored on a base hit by Miller, staking the Sultans to a 6-1 lead.
In the fifth inning NIK MORA lined a triple and scored on a base hit by Rasmusson.
An inning later Santana erupted for another 6 runs. Mora tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Miller. SALINAS singled and scored on a triple by REECE HERNANDEZ. Nunez then doubled in Hernandez to key the big inning.
After that it was game over.

MONTE VISTA 11, EL CAJON VALLEY 3 – The Monte Vista Monarchs took another step toward a possible playoff berth as they evened their Grossmont Valley League mark to 4-4 and hoisted their overall record to 8-14 by dunking visiting El Cajon Valley on Tuesday (May 3).
Not known for its power hitting, Monte Vista put up 11 runs in the first three innings against the Braves and emptied the bench en route to a lopsided victory.
BRYAN HARMON belted an RBI double to key a 6 run rally in the second inning to put
Monte Vista on the board.
FRANK GUTIERREZ added an RBI single in a game filled with stolen bases and errors. ANTHONY GONZALES was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI to spark the Monarchs.
In the third inning Harmon singled and scored on a wild pitch. JON GULLEY added an RBI single, TAYLOR MARQUEZ doubled and scored on a base hit by Frank Gutierrez. Marquez also had a triple later in the game. Anthony Gonzales also singled in a run to extend Monte Vista’s advantage.
HECTOR CARREON was 3-for-4 for El Cajon Valley and GABE CASTILLO was 2-for-2.
