EL CAJON (5-3-16) — Junior CHASE WEHSENER continues to provide surprises for the Christian High Patriots. Whether at first base or on the mound, Wehsener is certain to leave his mark.
Not many are aware of Wehsener’s multiple talents.
“He’s totally the epitome of the unsung hero,” said Patriots coach MIKE MITCHELL. “He’s totally unassuming and totally awesome wherever I put him.”
Wehsener took a spin on the mound in Monday’s (May 2) Central League encounter and fired a complete game 5-0 victory over the visiting Clairemont Chieftains. It was the third complete game effort of the season for Wehsener who struck out 7 in posting his 4th win in 6 decisions.
Wherever he’s stationed the key word for him is “smooth.” Nobody in the county can turn a 3-6-3 double play better than he can.
“He’s our MVP of the season, hands down,” said Mitchell. “Everything he does he makes look routine – just effortlessly.”
Wehsener can also swing the bat, as the proved against Clairemont, with 2 hits and an RBI in 4 at-bats.
The Patriots (12-8, 4-1 CL) took the lead in the second inning. GARRETT NEILSEN walked and advanced to third on a double by JAKOB BECK. Nielsen attempted to score on a ground ball hit by NATE CAZARES but was cut down at the plate, leaving runners at the corners.
NICK JARVIS hit a ground ball to shortstop that could have been an inning-ending double play but was muffed, allowing Beck to score the first run. KYLE STOWERS then slashed an RBI single to make it 2-0 after two.
In the third Nielsen laced a solo home run over the left field fence to make it 3-0.
Christian put together singles by ZACH HOGUIESSON and JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD to start the fifth inning. JOHN GERSHOW then walked to load the bases. Nielsen hoisted a sacrifice fly but that would be all the Patriots would get that inning.
With two outs in the sixth inning Stowers singled to right, stole second and scored on a base hit by Wehsener.
These teams will meet again on Wednesday (May 4) at Clairemont with a 3:30 start.
