EL CAJON – A swarm of bees caused the El Capitan Vaqueros to abandon their field and move a scheduled Grossmont Hills League game to Granite Hills Tuesday (Apr. 26).
Nonetheless the Vaqueros put the sting on the Eagles, knocking off the ranked “hosts” 6-3.
TRISTAN DUNCAN, one of the top pitchers in the county, checked the Eagles on 7 hits and 3 runs while striking out 9 over six innings. He was awarded his second win in five decisions as BLAKE PEYTON pitched a shutout 7th inning.
El Capitan snapped a 2-2 tie with 3 runs in the 5th inning. VICTOR CARLINO slashed an RBI single and JASON MOORMAN singled in another run. DAWSON McCLANAHAN closed the scoring with an RBI single.
The Eagles shaved the lead on an RBI double by TREVOR HAZELHURST, but that would be as close as No. 4 ranked Granite Hills would come, as Duncan induced an inning-ending strike out. Hazelhurst finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Vaqueros took the last of four lead changes in a back-and-forth affair.
The Vaqueros pulled out the win thanks to a wild pitch in the fifth inning, as KENNY OLHAUSER scored to give Vaqueros the lead for good.
Vaqueros’ closer BLAKE PEYTON put away the final three outs to record the save.
