SPRING VALLEY (4-15-16) — Guided by the strong arm pitching of ANTHONY ROSARIO (1-0) and ANDREW GONZALES, host Monte Vista evened its season-opening Grossmont Valley League series by edging visiting Mount Miguel 4-3 on Thursday (Apr. 14).
Rosario, who has played several positions for the Monarchs (5-10, 1-1 GVL), was called upon to make a start in a key game. He came through big time, allowing only 2 hits, no earned runs, one walk and 6 strikeouts.
Monte Vista jumped in front with 3 runs in the third inning. FRANK GUTIERREZ walked, Andrew Gonzales singled and DAVID GARCIA walked. BRENDAN COLLIS then hit a 2-run double to put the Monarchs ahead 3-0.
In the fourth inning, Andrew Gonzales slashed an RBI single to close out the Monte Vista scoring.
Mount Miguel wasn’t ready to roll over. The Matadors broke into the score zone as JOHNNY NICASIO tripled and scored when he stole home.
The Matadors kept crawling back in the sixth.
MIGUEL OROZCO hammered an RBI double to score ANDREW MONTIJO who reached base after being hit by a pitch. The Matadors scored again on a Monte Vista error to close the gap to one run. But that was where it would stand.
Andrew Gonzales was 3-for-3 with 2 stolen bases and a pitching save to pace the Monarchs’ 7-hit attack.
“We were finally able to get some key hits,” said Monarchs coach MATT ATKINSON. “It was good to get this one because we didn’t want to start out 0-2. We gave the ball to Rosario and he gave us a solid lift for five innings.”

WEST HILLS 14, EL CAJON VALLEY 1 (4 inn.) – SAM HUGHES and AARON BARKLEY collected three RBI each, while DYLAN CRAFT and RANDY JEWELL each drove in a pair, as the Wolf Pack continued its dominance of the Braves.
El Cajon Valley High senior HECTOR CARREON continued his hot hitting, including an RBI single to snap a lengthy scoring drought against West Hills in Thursday’s (Apr. 14) abbreviated Grossmont Valley League ballgame.
Moments before the start of the 5th inning, a Braves fan suffered a seizure and was taken to Sharp Grossmont Hospital. The fan, a good friend of several ECV ballplayers, upset them enough (and considering the score) requested the action be stopped.
The result is considered a final score and not a suspended contest. The Wolf Pack are now 9-6 overall (2-0 GVL); the Braves fell to 8-5 (0-2 GVL).
Down 10-0 in the 3rd, Carreon whistled a sharp basehit through the hole to right field, allowing JESUS FAVELA (safe on error) to race home from second base. It was the first Braves run against West Hills following 78 consecutive runs allowed in the series.
Last season, West Hills and El Cajon Valley were paired into the same league for the first time in six seasons. The Pack won the first meeting 24-2, with ECV scoring in the bottom of the 7th.
West Hills later won 21-0 and 23-0, then started this season with a 24-0 win. And with the first 10 runs, the streak extended to 78 runs before getting answered by Carreon.
Including the Pack’s school record 34-1 win in 2011 (the teams did not meet in 2012-14), West Hills has now outscored the Braves by a 140-4 count in the last six games in the series since ’11.
On the flip side, Carreon owns a nice streak, too. After reaching base in all three of his at-bats Tuesday (infield single, two walks), his RBI single gives him an on-base percentage of .800 for the week against West Hills.
ZACHARIAH SANDOVAL allowed just one hit and struck out three over three scoreless innings for West Hills.
BRADEN SANFORD drove in DANIEL ALVAREZ as part of a four-run third. ALEX MOORE struck out the side in one inning of work, sandwiching a couple of walks during the frame.
SAMMY SANDEZ scored three runs for West Hills.

SANTANA 7, OLYMPIAN 1 – If ever there were an early challenger for Grossmont Valley League Player of the Year it would have to be versatile junior TRISTEN SALINAS.
In Thursday’s (Apr. 14) non-league encounter against visiting Olympian Salinas was 3-for-4 with a double and 3 runs scored as the Sultans rolled to a lopsided victory.
To boot, Salinas pitched four shutout innings allowing only one hit while striking out 8 to earn his 3rd save.
After falling behind 1-0 Santana regained the lead with 2 runs in the bottom of the third. Salinas led off with a double and advanced as far as third on a double by REECE HERNANDEZ. After NOAH NUNEZ walked to load the bases, JACOB ODENKIRK hit into a fielder’s choice, allowing Salinas to score.
The Sultans took the lead when Hernandez stole home.
Santana stretched its advantage with two more markers in the fourth. MITCHELL MILLER got hit by a pitch and Salinas reached base on an error. Miller and Salinas then pulled off a double steal and rode home on a 2-run single by Hernandez.
Santana broke the game open in the sixth inning on RBI singles by Salinas, Nunez and Odenkirk.

SWEETWATER 1, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 0 – The Knights of Foothills Christian suffered a bitter defeat as pitchers KONNER VON DER LIETH and DUSTIN EICHER combined to pitch a no-hitter against the Red Devils in a non-league game Thursday (Apr. 14) in National City.
Sweetwater (10-8) capitalized on second inning wildness by Von Der Lieth to produce the only run in the game.
Other than that both teams played solid defense and the Knights (4-7) collected the only 3 hits in the game.
EZRA SIMS got a base hit, as did TREVOR SMALLWOOD and MARK PROFETA.
