SAN DIEGO (4-14-16) After trading wins and losses during a rugged preseason schedule the Christian Patriots have taken aim at winning the Central League pennant.
Step one in their title quest began on Wednesday (Apr. 13) when they clipped Clairemont 4-2 in an eight inning battle on the Chieftains’ field.
The Patriots squeezed out a victory with 2 runs in the eighth inning as ZACH HOGUIESSON followed a two-out single by CHASE WEHSENER with his 3rdhome run of the season.
Christian received solid pitching from JOHN GERSHOW and KYLE STOWERS to cage the Chieftains (11-7, 0-2 CL). Gershow allowed only one earned run and struck out 8 in a seven-inning stint to earn his 3rd win in five decisions.
Stowers struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth to post his East County-leading 4th save.
Christian (9-7, 2-1 CL) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD singled and scored on a triple down the left field line by Gershow. GARRETT NIELSEN then chased home Gershow with a sacrifice fly.
“This was kind of a strange game,” said Patriots coach MIKE MITCHELL. “I thought Gershow’s home run over a 16-foot fence 315 feet from home plate was gonna go off the wall, and I think he felt the same way as he broke so fast out of the box. It traveled farther than any of us thought it would go, and that’s a plus for us.”
