EL CAJON (4-14-16) — The 14th ranked (No. 8 in Southern California) Grossmont College softball team did their best football impersonation as they “kicked four field goals” on their way to a 12-0 run-rule shortened Pacific Coast Athletic Conference game at the Griffin Softball Complex on Wednesday (April 13).
Ten of the twelve Griffins (24-10-1, 9-5 PCAC) that played recorded a hit in the victory.
AMANDA IZZO (Hemet) had a game-high three hits in four trips to the plate.
Izzo began the game with a single and promptly stole second. KATIE SCHMIDT (Valhalla) tripled to left field to bring Izzo in to break the seal on the scoring. After a lineout, Schmidt scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0. SIERRA SALAZAR (Helix) singled through the left side. Salazar followed the example that Izzo sat as she stole second. SOPHIA SAHAGUN (Heritage Christian) singled through the left side to bring in Salazar for a 3-0 lead after one inning of work.
The second inning took the first inning and improved upon it. ALEXIS FLORES (Calexico) singled to get the frame started. JESSICA RUBIO (Patrick Henry) singled through the left side which allowed Flores to move to second. Izzo came up and singled to left center to load the bases up. Schmidt singled through the left side to bring in Rubio and Flores for a 5-0 lead, while Izzo moved to second. A fly out to center was deep enough for Izzo to tag up and go to third. DIAMOND MEJIA (West Ranch) came up with two outs, with Izzo still on third and Schmidt had stayed on first. Mejia cleared the bases with her second home run of the season to put the Griffins up 8-0.
Flores singled with one out to get the third inning started. Rubio followed that with an infield single of her own to put runners on first and second. Izzo singled through the right side ushering Rubio to second and Flores homeward bound. RACHEL EVERETT (Bonita Vista) had an RBI single to bring home Rubio and move Izzo to second. Salazar singled past the shortstop which allowed Izzo to score safely and Everett advanced to second for a 11-0 lead.
Sahagun led off the fourth inning with her first home run of her collegiate career.
After Everett (11-3) threw to four batters in the top of the fifth, the afternoon was done with the mercy rule in effect.
Friday will see the Griffins travel to Mt. San Jacinto for the penultimate road contest of the regular season.
