SPRING VALLEY (4-13-16) — In a Grossmont Valley League opener between Spring Valley rivals Monte Vista and Mount Miguel, the Matadors prevailed 6-2 behind the pitching of ANDREW MONTIJO on Tuesday (Apr. 12).
In six innings work Montijo allowed only 4 hits and one earned run as he evened his record at 3-3.
MIGUEL OROZCO came in to the seventh inning to shut down a budding Monte Vista rally.
The first batter of the game, Monte Vista’s ANTHONY ROSARIO slashed a drive that appeared to be an extra base hit down the left field line. Mount Miguel left fielder CHRIS CONWRIGHT was on the move at the crack of the bat as he took off on a sprint toward the line. He layed out and rolled over to make the catch.
“That set the tone of the game,” said Mount Miguel coach LB HAVIRD.
The Matadors took the lead in the third inning. AUSTIN ORTIZ doubled into the left-center field gap. He advanced to third on a passed ball and scored when RUBEN PRECIADO executed a perfect safety squeeze bunt.
Standing at second base Preciado eventually scored on a base hit by JOHNNY NICASIO, who stole second. Pitcher Montijo brought Nicasio home with a single to make it 3-0.
In the fourth inning Orozco led off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Once again the Matadors turned to playing short ball. JOEL SANDOVAL put down a bunt that the Monarchs misplayed, allowing Orozco to score. Sandoval scored on another squeeze bunt and Ortiz capped the inning with an RBI single.
“Montijo gives us some good input and he’s probably our best all around player,” said Havird.
Monte Vista avoided the shutout on an RBI single by DIAGO SANDOVAL in the sixth inning, and an RBI groundout by Andrew Gonzales in the seventh.
WEST HILLS 24, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 — JEREMIAH BARR had seven RBI, including a grand slam, and pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings to carry the West Hills Wolf Pack over El Cajon Valley at West Hills in six innings.
Five runs in the opening three innings allowed West Hills to establish control, and a steal of home by Barr during the second inning helped the West Hills extend the lead.
Barr also singled in the fifth inning and scored four runs in the contest. He finished his pitching outing with 14 strikeouts and nearly completed a shortened no-hitter. However, El Cajon Valley’s HECTOR CARREON beat out an infield single to third base with two outs in the top of the sixth.
West Hills built upon its lead with four runs in the third. A steal of home by SAMMY SANDEZ started the scoring in the inning. That was followed up by NICK WILSON’s single, scoring AARON BARKLEY.
The Wolf Pack added 12 more runs in the bottom of the fourth. A bases-loaded walk scored Sandez to open the scoring in the frame.
West Hills piled on seven more runs in the bottom of the fifth. A bases loaded walk scored DYLAN CRAFT. That was followed up by Barr’s single, scoring BRADEN SANFORD and PAUL ANDERSON.
NOAH QUINTANA had three RBI and two hits. Wilson and Craft also both had a pair of RBI.
