EL CAJON (3-30-16) — In Jaguar Classic action in El Cajon, Tuesday (Mar. 29) it was a 5 inning affair as the Granite Hills Eagles run ruled the University Centurions 10-0.
Granite started things off in their half of the first as CASSIDY SHEW (1-2, 2 R) led off with a single, she moved up on a passed ball, KAREN CREECH (2 R, 2 RBI) walked, HALLE KYLER (RUN) hit into what would have been a fielder’s choice but all the runners were safe, KAYLA MACK (1-3, RBI, R) hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Shew as the second basemen made an error, Creech and Kyler would steal second and third base, Creech would come into score and Kyler would score on a wild pitch to make it a 3-0 lead for the Eagles.
The Eagles would use more tricks out of their arsenal in the bottom of the fourth as they scored 7 runs to extend their lead to 10-0. Mack led off with a single up the middle, MADISON CALDWELL (1-2, R) singled which advanced Mack to third, she would steal second, JESSIE LAPIERRE (1-2, RBI, R) layed down a perfect bunt that scored Mack, SYDNEY HUSE (1-2, 2 RBI, R) drilled a single that scored both LaPierre and Caldwell, ERICA SIMON (RUN) drew a walk, Shew drew another walk and Creech reached on an error that scored both Huse and Simon. Both Shew and Creech would score as well to round out the scoring.
Granite Hills starter KATIE DOBBS went out for the top of the fifth and continued where she left in striking out two of the three University City batters. In the victory she tossed the complete game shutout, giving up only 2 hits while striking out 9 on the day.
EL CAPITAN 4, OTAY RANCH 3 – In non-league action in Lakeside, Tuesday (Mar. 29) the El Capitan Vaqueros used some late inning magic to beat the Otay Ranch Mustangs 4-3.
Things got off on the right foot for the Vaqueros as leadoff hitter MADISYN WIEHER (RUN) drew the walk, she would be sacrificed over to second, ALLYSON VON YOKES (RUN) struck out for the second out, so with two down and a runner at second GRACE BURKETT (3-3, 2B, RBI) boomed a double that scored Wieher to lead 1-0.
The Vaqueros sent out ELENA LODDEN to the circle, in the second inning she would give up a couple of hits with two outs but would than get the third out via a groundout. El Capitan looked to add more in the bottom of the third inning. Things didn’t look good as the first two batters were retired. So with two outs up stepped Von Yokes who was able to draw the walk. She moved to second on the single by Burkett, AMANDA VASQUEZ (1-3, R) with her single brought in Von Tokes to make it 2-0 Vaqueros. The Mustangs would get out of the inning with a fly out.
The Vaqueros would go back and forth with the Centurions as each held each other scoreless until the top of the sixth when the Mustangs finally got on the board. They would push across a couple of runs to tie the score 2-2.
It would be in the bottom of the sixth that the Vaqueros were able to dig into their bag and pull it out. BAILY OLAVESON singled, she would move over to third on a ground out by TESSA LOHMAN, not until a couple of batter later would SAVANNAH MINSHEW would be the hero as she hit into a fielders choice that allowed Olaveson to score what ended up being the game winning run.
Lodden who tossed a complete game in the victory, gave up 2 runs on 8 hits while striking out 1 on the day.

Grossmont 3, Christian 0 – Pitching and defense along with some offense propelled the visiting Grossmont Foothillers to a 3-0 victory over the home team Christian Patriots in the Jaguar Classic, Tuesday (Mar. 29).
Grossmont in the top of the first got on the board thanks to CARLY PEARSON reaching on a fielders choice, she would come into score on a rifled single to right center by ALEXIS COLLINS to lead 1-0. Christian would have their shot in the bottom half of the inning as ANNA SHERBURNE (1-2) and SHANNON MCMAHON (2-3) singled consecutively but SAMARIA ROOPE would get TENAY BANEGAS to ground out for the final out of the inning.
The Patriots would have another opportunity in the bottom of the third as SILENT RAIN ESPONOSA (2-4, 2B) would double with one down, she would be bunted over but wouldn’t score as Anna Sherburne grounded out. Grossmont would tack on a run in the top of the fourth as TAYLOR BAEZ (2 RBI, HR, 2B) clubbed a solo jack deep over the center field fence for the 2-0 lead.
Trailing by two runs, the Patriots tried to get back into the game as MALLORY STEELE (2-3) led off with a single in the bottom of the fifth but Roope retired the next three batters to get out of the inning. Grossmont tacked their final run on in the top of the sixth thanks to a single by KATIE APPENZELLER. Roope would bunt her over and actually beat out the play for the hit, BAEZ came back up and was able to rip a double to left center which allowed Appenzeller to score to make it 3-0.

Ramona 2, Valhalla 1 (8 innings) – The Ramona Bulldogs traveled inland to take on the host Valhalla Norsemen and were able to nip them 2-1 in the Jaguar tournament, Tuesday (Mar. 29) in eight innings.
Both teams went back and forth, keeping each other scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Valhalla finally broke through to push across a run to lead 1-0. Leadoff hitter ALEXIS INGRASSIA drew a walk, JADE HILL would come in as a courtesy runner, GIANNA PAAPE (2-2) singled and BRANDI KOHEL (2-4) singled with two outs, Hill would come into score on a wild pitch.
Unfortunately the one run lead wouldn’t last as the Bulldogs would use small ball to push across the tying run in the top of the sixth inning. A double and a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly would lead to the run. Valhalla had a shot to win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning as EMILY HOWARD singled, she would be sacrificed over to second, VICTORIA VILLEGGAS would fly out for the second out, Pappe would single moving Howard to third but they both would be stranded as the next batter was retired.
So the game moved into extra innings with Ramona getting The first crack in the top of the eighth, they led off with a triple, the Norsemen almost got out of the inning as they retired the next couple of batters but unfortunately a wild pitch by LILY METSCH would allow the Bulldog runner to score from third base to make it 2-1.
Valhalla would get one last shot to either tie or win the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Leadoff hitter Kohel would single, she would advance on the sacrifice, KENNEDY LABSHERE would ground out for the second out, SAMANTHA GREEN drew the walk, and Howard also drew a walk to load the bases, unfortunately that would be the closest they would get as the next batter flew out for the final out of the game.
